Michael Jordan was known for his ruthless competitiveness and his ability to dominate his opponents on the basketball court. But one of his former teammates, Charles Barkley, recently shared a story that showed how far Jordan would go to get back at someone who disrespected him.
Barkley, who was also a star player for the Phoenix Suns in the 1990s, told the story on his podcast ‘The Steam Room’. He said that before the quarter-final game against Puerto Rico at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, he went to play golf with Jordan, coach Chuck Daly, and center David Robinson. They played 18 holes and then Daly suggested they should head back to the hotel and rest for the game. But Jordan had other plans.
“Michael is the most competitive person I have ever been around in my life. Me, him, Chuck Daly, and David Robinson go play golf one morning…Chuck says ‘Hey we played 18’, Michael says ‘Imma play another 18,’” Barkley said.
Barkley was confused by Jordan’s decision until he learned the reason behind it. Jordan had a personal grudge against the Puerto Rican point guard, who had apparently said something negative about him in the newspaper.
“Michael said ‘I got the point guard……He said some sh** about me in the newspaper and I’m gonna get him,’” Barkley said.

Michael Jordan takes revenge on Puerto Rican player who badmouthed him
Barkley and the others realized that the Puerto Rican point guard was in trouble. Jordan played 36 holes of golf and then proceeded to guard him like it was game 7 of the NBA Finals. He also taunted him throughout the game, telling him to never say his name again.
“He played 36 holes ago and he is guarding this dude like it is game 7 and he is talking, ‘Don’t you ever say my damn name again’. I’m looking at Karl Malone and I’m like ‘You know man, there is something wrong with this dude,’” Barkley said.
Michael Jordan’s intimidation worked, as he held the Puerto Rican point guard (James Carter) to just six points on 2-of-8 shooting. The Dream Team won the game by a huge margin, 115-77. Jordan finished with four points, four assists, three rebounds, two steals, and one block in 22 minutes of action.
