In a time of challenges and surprising turnarounds during the 2021-2022 NBA season, the Atlanta Hawks found themselves under the spotlight, not for their performances but due to some controversial remarks made by former NBA superstar, Charles Barkley. Before the highly anticipated match against the Bucks on MLK Day, Barkley didn’t hold back as he expressed his harsh opinion on the then struggling Hawks.
Charles Barkley, known for his outspoken personality, used an inappropriate metaphor to describe the Hawks’ performance, comparing the team to a “pretty girl whose makeup came off and she’s ugly.” Many people found this comment to be misogynistic and disrespectful because it seemed to objectify women while minimizing the efforts of a team that was struggling to keep their form.
The 2021 Eastern Conference finalists were experiencing a challenging season, a stark contrast to their previous season where they managed to clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals. As of that time, they were holding a bad 18-25 record, placing them in a disappointing 12th position in the East.
Atlanta Hawks’ response to Charles Barkley’s unflattering comparison
Despite Barkley’s comments, the Hawks were unaffected as they faced the defending champions, the Bucks. In what appeared to be a strong display of determination, the Hawks managed to secure an unexpected victory, avoiding their longest stretch without a home victory since the 2004-2005 season.
However, their journey to comeback was far from smooth. With only 6 victories out of their last 21 games, the Hawks were positioned 4 games behind the 10th-seed Celtics. The once dominant team of the 2021 playoffs found themselves in a difficult situation, needing to fight with all their strength in the second half of the season to secure a place in the play-in games, if not the postseason.
In future, Barkley’s comments served as a reminder of the immense pressure and scrutiny that teams face when they are unable to replicate past successes. It was also proof to the Hawks’ resilience as they fought hard to rewrite their narrative and reclaim their spot as one of the most formidable teams in the league.
