Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley is a household name in the world of basketball. He was a ferocious power forward who revolutionized the position. A former MVP and NBA finalist, Barkley remains one of the best players in the history of the game to have never won a championship. To this day he is connected to basketball by being the funniest member of Inside the NBA.

Charles Barkley’s jovial personality is perfectly suited for late-night talk shows. The evidence is in his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2018. Barkley and Kimmel talked about Barkley’s career, his NBA career, how he once played a game drunk, and many more. Within that interview, Barkley hilariously admitted that the last time he played basketball was, “the day I retired.”

Despite being such a prominent basketball personality, the Hall of Famer doesn’t actually play the game anymore. And although on the surface Chuck’s jovial attitude may make it seem like something to laugh at, the reason why that is the case now is a little unfortunate. “You know, you retire because your body can’t take that abuse anymore,” says Charles when Jimmy asks him why he just never plays anymore.

‘The Chuckster’ as Ernie Johnson calls him, also went on to say how he had to have replacement surgery on both hips and also told Kimmel about other damages his body has had to bear. Athletes give their everything every time they step on the field and risk their long-term health and safety for the entertainment of the people and as such, they should ideally get universal recognition.

Charles Barkley goes too far while trying to be funny, threatens Skip Bayless

On a 2017 episode of the Dan Patrick show, we saw an example of Charles Barkley going too far while trying to be funny which sometimes is a consequence of his unfiltered personality on live TV. The former Phoenix Suns player was interviewed and he made a shocking threat against Skip Bayless. Barkley said, “If I get a disease and I’m gonna die, how about you get Skip Bayless in here and I kill him live on national television. Only if I know I’m going to die, I don’t wanna be in prison.”

Understandably distressed, Bayless addressed it in an episode of his podcast,“For about 15 years, on all kinds of national TV platforms, Charles Barkley has regularly and relentlessly said he would like to – and I quote – ‘kill’ me. My wife, Ernestine, has believed for 15 years that Charles Barkley is nothing but a sick individual. To her, he is just pure evil. That he is depraved, that he is a scumbag.” All of us love Barkley for the entertainment he provides. However, this incident should serve as a permanent reminder that you can’t just say anything in the name of comedy.
