“Want to drive to mmom’s graveyard and say…” Charles Barkley sounds off Bradley Beal, modern-day players signing luxurious contracts

Charles Barkley talks about Bradley Beal

Washington Wizards set a franchise record for their marquee player Bradley Beal after he recently signed a five-year, $251 million extension to stay in D.C. entering his 11th NBA season. Bradley Beal’s extension is the second-largest in league history. Very recently Nuggets set a league record for the same as they tied their star Nikola Jokic for 5-year $264 million extensions.

Looking at these astonishing figures, Charles Barkley gave hilarious reactions, while he was on Washington Football Talk Podcast. When asked about Beal’s big deal on a recent episode of the NBA legend Charles Barkley said, “Wow, Let me tell you something. My mom—I love my mom, she passed away a few years ago. Every time I see one of those contracts, I want to drive to the graveyard and just snatch her up and say, ‘Why couldn’t you just wait a couple more years to have me?! Just a couple more years!’

Chuck played 15 odd seasons in the league, was named MVP in 1993, made 11 All-Star teams, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest power forwards of all time. But commercially he made a total of just over $40 million dollars in career salary, per Spotrac. While 3-time all-star Beal’s extension is over six times the amount that Barkley earned in his entire career which is jaw-dropping.

NBA’s 2012 3rd overall pick Bradley Beal has been a sensational start for the Wizards and quickly moved up to stardom at the capital. But compared to some previous stars, he had not made any huge mark on the league. He has been a 3-time All-Star and has 50% playoff appearances. Yet, Washington Wizards tied their guard for a longer period, and at $251 Million.

Beal certainly earned his deal, too. He’s just one year removed from being the second-leading scorer in the NBA behind only Steph Curry during the 2020-21 season and is primed to hopefully bring Washington to just their second playoff appearance in the last five seasons.

But after the said comic comments, Barley gave his true views, “You know what? Bless these young guys,” he said. “Bradley Beal’s a hell of a player. I don’t ever want to be the old ‘Get off my lawn’ guy. I made more money than Bill Russell, he’s a much better player than me. I made more money than Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar], he’s a much, much better player than me. Hey, God bless them. It’s good work if you can get it.”

Now that the money’s secured, it would be Beal’s responsibility to make good on his new deal. He’s a got a solid supporting cast in D.C. with effective wings like Kyle Kuzma and Rui Hachimura, not to mention a premiere if the oft-injured center in Kristaps Porzingis. Wizards couldn’t make it to the playoffs last season finishing with a 35-47 record in the East.
