Brittney Griner has been on a constant struggle since February after being detained by the Russian authorities. He was caught for carrying illegal substances in her luggage through the airport while she was on her way to perform for the UMMC Ekaterinburg team. It has been close to 120 days since she last came in contact with her wife or seen American soil.
The two-time Olympic medalist is currently set to appear for trial on July 2nd, 2022. So far, the WNBA star has been spending time in custody at a pre-trial detention center where several concerns over her safety have arisen. This could be a very sensitive and crucial case for the United State government as Russia has not been very co-operative with their pleas.
Russian President Vladmir Putin claims Brittney Griner is not a political hostage
Many believe that the Phoenix Mercury star is being wrongly held as a political pawn to help Russia manipulate the US into falling for their requests. Recently, the spokesperson of Russia spoke to NBC saying, “We cannot call her a hostage. She violated Russian law, and now she’s being prosecuted. Hundreds and hundreds of Russian citizens that were sentenced for carrying hashish.”
The risk of having Brittney Griner lose this trial would require her to serve up to ten years in prison. Her condition under to custody of Russian authorities has been a top concern. So far, she has not been able to directly make contact to her family and representatives in the US. The blame keeps shifting between both parties with one claiming the US has not made efforts and the other claiming the Russian’s are being uncooperative.

Cherelle Griner says she has absolutely no trust in the American government
Cherelle Griner, Brittney Griner’s wife spoke about the scheduled call they were supposed to have. Cherelle claimed that the call did not come through. This was because the couple was celebrating their wedding anniversary. She spoke to the Associated Press saying, “I find it unacceptable and I have zero trust in our government right now.”
“I was done, fed up… I wasn’t well, I’m still not well. This would have been the first time for me to actually just hear her in real times and to truly know if she’s OK or to know if she’s seconds away from not being in existence anymore,” she told AP. Many have claimed that Brittney’s situation could get worse solely because of her orientation as well.
