OKC Thunder’s prodigy Chet Holmgren is only 21 years old. He had a difficult start to his NBA career which saw him sit out the entirety of his true rookie season. That may be something he looks back at with little to no fondness.
However, the fact that Holmgren is still considered a rookie, means that he is part of one of the most entertaining ROTY races of all time, alongside San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama. A majority of fans considered Victor to be the obvious favorite for the title, simply because of his generational capabilities.
The 21-year-old French International stands at 7 4”, but has the skill and the handles of a younger, smaller player. 32 games into the season, Holmgren seems to have surpassed Wemby in the race and has continued to impress in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old however, is not jumping to any conclusions himself. During a recent interview following OKC’s win over the Boston Celtics, Holmgren was asked what he had proved thus far, as a result of his utterly impressive start in the NBA. He had a simple response.
I haven’t proven sh*t. I’ve played 30 games.
Hence, not only is Holmgren surpassing expectations on a weekly basis, he also appears to have his head screwed on tight. The player knows that he is lucky to have the kind of support Wembanyama can only dream of, and is not looking to make any bold statements, just yet.
Chet Holmgren has surpassed expectations in the NBA
Holmgren is currently going at an impressive 17.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. That, alongside an efficiency of 61.5%, and the fact that he is not the team’s main attacking option or their main ball handler, means there is plenty of scope to improve.
Holmgren has more than emerged as the perfect foil for the utterly talented Victor Wembanyama, a player the Spurs have failed to get the best out of, thus far. With Spurs leaking losses like a torn plastic bag, Holmgren appears determined to emerge as the ROTY winner.
That of course, does not suggest that he will go on to have a better career than his generational competitor Wembanyama. However, a player who wasn’t being seen as anything special is now being viewed as a potential regen of Kevin Durant. Such is the extent of Holmgren’s impressive performances thus far.
