LeBron James had no hand in Darvin Ham's selection at the Los Angeles Lakers coaching position
The search for the right personnel for filling the vacant spot of head coach at Los Angeles Lakers has ended as they hired Darvin Ham last week. Upon which sports media personality Chris Broussard considers that Superstar, LeBron James has no say in this.
Los Angeles Lakers parted ways with Frank Vogel at the end of the 2022 season, right after the end of their regular season games. Now after a month-long search and series of interviews, they have selected Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham as their head coach. Ham was a member of the Bucks Championship winning coaching staff last season. After many interviews and candidates, the Lakers front office put their trust in Ham, who signed 4 years deal with the franchise. Chris Broussard congratulates the new coach and stated that LeBron James was not pulling strings behind the scene.
As per Broussard, LBJ would have gone for an experienced coach and this is Darvin’s 1st head coaching assignment. He sought out the traits of Darvin Ham and considers it as a hood pick from the LA Lakers. Also Many see this as a long-term plan to lure Giannis Antetokounmpo to Hollywood.

Lakers’ former assistant coach was said to have made the most impression on the front office during the coaching interviews carried out by the LA franchise. He was considered the front runner and received extensive praise for his work with Milwaukee Bucks. He has experience in handling megastars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kobe Bryant, and Pau Gasol.
Importantly 2004 NBA Champion Ham is well respected by the players and has worked closely with Giannis’ development. After the confirmation of the news, Many Lakers players and fans sent congratulations and wishes and even expressed a positive vibe about the appointment. NBA analyst Chris Broussard has also applauded the LA Lakers for their recruitment – labeling it as a ‘good hire’
Broussard pointed out some positive impacts Ham would have on the team and highlighted his connections with players, strong presence, and the respect he receives from his peers could have influenced his selection on the Hot Seat.
Broussard said, “He has a very strong presence and he’s well respected by players, he’s not a pushover and yet he is very likeable. So, I think this is a great hire. He’s got the resume, he’s been on a championship staff in Milwaukee, he’s coached a superstar in Giannis.”
Now many speculated about LeBron’s part in the selection, but Chris suggests against it. He sees the appointment as a completely Front office decision. But LeBron is a Megastar who drives the team on the court and his say has some weightage in any team. As per Broussard, LeBron might have been informed just like everyone one else.
“I’m sure LeBron is on board with it but to me this is clearly not a hire where LeBron dictated it,” Broussard said. “My strong believe is he’s on board with Darvin, but if they had just gone to LeBron and been like, ‘Hey, who do you think we should?’ Like my guess is LeBron would have went with a veteran. A Doc Rivers may be or someone like that who has a lot experience.”
Many even speculated Tyron Lue as LeBron’s 1st choice right from the start of his Laker career, also Broussard made a very interesting point about LBJ’s inclination toward an experienced coach.4-time NBA Champion LeBron James welcomed Darvin Ham with an open mind and was ready for a new chapter in his illustrious career.
After filling out the head coach’s position, the Lakers will discuss hiring his support staff which would also be sorted out in the coming days. In total Darvin Ham’s recruitment has been well received by the Lakers Nation, as they look forward to putting the disastrous season behind them and starting fresh for the 2022-23 season.
