“He’s not as dominant as the numbers suggest” Chris Broussard exposes MVP candidate Nikola Jokic following Game 2 loss vs Warriors
Chris Broussard and Nikola Jokic
It looks like the stars are slowly aligning for the Golden State Warriors but at the cost of Nikola Jokic’s legacy. Last year, the Joker and the Denver Nuggets had an exceptional year going up to the semi-finals until their main point guard got injured and they got swept by their opposition. However, the center was very deserving of the Most Valuable Player award after leading the team to the third seed while averaging 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game.
This year, Nikola Jokic was given the responsibility of leading his entire squad without Jamal Murray (ACL) and Michael Porter Jr. (Back). He put up exceptional numbers bringing his team into the post-season as the Nuggets finished as the sixth seed with a record of 48 wins and 34 losses. Jokic is most likely to win his second straight MVP this season leading the rankings at -275 odds.
Nikola Jokic fails to bring Nuggets a victory in the first two games of round-one
Coming into this season’s playoffs, the Warriors were not looking too great and it seemed like Nikola Jokic’s Nuggets had a chance to push it past Game 5. Things took a slight turn for the worse as Stephen Curry returned from injury during Game 1 and the Warriors were rejuvenated. The Nuggets lost to the Warriors 123-107 and Jokic only scored 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Game 2 also took a similar turn as the Warriors took a victory 126-106. Draymond Green was paired with Jokic and held the reigning MVP to 9-20 from the field. The Joker was ejected from the game finishing the night with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Curry had a major playoff comeback moment after putting up 34 points shooting 12 of 17 from the field. The Nuggets did not perform well on defense recording 4 blocks and 4 steals with 16 turnovers.
Chris Broussard makes a harsh critique on Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets
Nikola Jokic has started to show that he cannot handle the playoff intensity too well after being held back from the Warriors. The Nugget was seemingly frustrated throughout the game as he was not able to crack the Dubs’ defense. Chris Broussard supported the talk about Jokic not showing out in the post-season which ultimately renders himself an unworthy MVP. He highlighted incidents from the past such as Steve Nash winning the award more than Shaq and Kobe.
According to Broussard, the Warriors vs Nuggets series so far has exposed Jokic for the worse. “What’s being exposed is Jokic to a large degree. He is not what these analytics guys think he is. Analytics are best whether it’s in baseball or basketball when its combined with the eye test… the intangibles. That’s what those guys… didn’t look at. He’s not as dominant as the numbers suggest. He’s struggling with Draymond Green,” said the analyst.
