“You’re excluding Magic and Kareem” Chris Broussard questions Gilbert Arenas’ top 10 all-time list

It’s never easy to decide the names of the top 10 players of all time in a sport, especially when one player after the other continues to break records set by his predecessor, each fan wants his/her favourite player in that list but when it comes to the top 10, only so many can be included in the list. For their opinions NBA analysts often find themselves in soup and this time NBA veteran Gilbert Arenas found himself in soup for his remarks.

In a recent interview of his on VLAD TV, Gilbert Arenas discussed potential players who’d make it to his list of top 10 players and much to everyone’s surprise he didn’t include a single player from the pre-90’s, for these comments the title of “child of controversy” fits him quite well, needless to say for his outrageous remarks he drew flake online both from fans and NBA pundits alike.

Gilbert Arenas’ shocking comments

Arenas appears to have sparked a debate by refusing to include any pre-1990s NBA player in his top ten list. This occurred when he stated that Steph Curry will undoubtedly rank among the top ten all-time players. Arenas’ opinions came as he was being interviewed on the Vlad TV YouTube channel. Gilbert Arenas said when asked where he would place Curry on his all-time list – “Without even just diving into my list, I’m going to just go and say, he’s [Curry] going to be top-10. Somehow, I’m going to put him in the top-10, knowing what I know. Knowing his work ethic, knowing his height, knowing what he does, the excitement, being a guard … I’m going to put him in the top-10.”

Arenas went on to explain why he didn’t include anyone from before the 1990s on his all-time list. He tried reason by saying “We’re trying to compare his [Curry] style to a style that is dinosaurish, you know what I mean? So, when someone is like, well, how are you going to leave out, like Larry Bird? Easy, easy, easy, like I can do that easy.”

Further, Gilbert Arenas added: “I can look at his stats and look at his stats and then go there not realizing, well the game is so much faster, meaning when they [pre-1990] were scoring 86, 96, these guys [Curry’s era] are scoring 100, 120, 140, so they’re gonna get more attempts than you. So, their numbers are going to be higher than yours. Theirs is going to be inflated because they’re moving faster. They’re not sitting there pounding the ball in. So it’s hard to really gauge, you know. So, I say, you know I can only go off of from ’90 up. Anybody before the ’90s, I can’t – I don’t – put them in my top 10.”

Chris Broussard on Gilbert Arenas’ remarks

Chris Broussard of Fox Sports Radio knocked down Arenas’ idea by saying “If you just want to say guys that played the bulk of their careers before 1990, then you’re excluding Magic Bird, Isiah (Thomas), Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar) and obviously (Bill) Russell, (Wilt) Chamberlain, Oscar (Robertson, Jerry West, Doctor J (Julius Erving)…Like, really? Come on, Gilbert, you? How about doing a little challenge? Can I say this: Look at a little film and look at some numbers … instead of just writing off, ‘I can’t even look at the ’90s.'”

Broussard was not the only one who was offended by Arenas’ remarks. Fans criticised Arenas on social media, pointing out the obvious error in removing the sport’s pioneers who were ahead of their time. Despite major differences in how NBA games are played now, Broussard believes the early greats could stay up- “The pace of play today is high, and half of the shots that these guys take are 3-pointers. So, if anything, the players today should be scoring more points, right? I mean, Can you imagine if half of Larry Bird’s shots – let’s say 35% of Larry Bird shots – were 3-pointers, he’d average way more points!”
