The Western Conference semi-finals have begun as the #1 Denver Nuggets put up a statement Game 1 win against the Phoenix Suns. Nuggets point guard, Jamal Murray bagged 34 points at home to open the series with a terrific performance. Despite Phoenix Suns’ impressive run in the past few games, the Nuggets came out on top of the contest, 107-125.
The Suns were on the back of a magnificent 4-1 first-round series win against the Los Angeles Clippers. Understandably, the star-studded lineup was expected to keep the winning momentum going. However, with Denver’s constant dominating performance this year, they proved to be tough opponents. Jokic clinching 24 points and dishing 19 rebounds was another prime contributor for the Nuggets. And eventually, the star-studded Suns found themselves in the mud, despite a 38-point performance by Chris Paul
Chris Paul, who has stuck around for a long time in the league stands as the face of the backlash in today’s defeat. It was the fourth quarter with just under six minutes to go. Otherwise, with a veteran demeanor, Paul expressed his frustration on the floor through a reaching foul on Jamal Murray. Denver was leading Phoenix by 19 points with the score at 95-114. Murray started running the offense off a rebound toward the relatively empty Phoenix half. Paul, who observes there was no defensive protection to stop the Nuggets from extending their lead, crossed Murray and blocked him in his path. This led to Murray falling and sliding forward across the floor as Paul picked up a reaching foul.
How are Denver Nuggets fans reacting to Chris Paul’s reaching foul on Jamal Murray?
Immediately after Paul’s aggressive intervention into Murray’s offensive fast break, the fans in Ball Arena made their voices heard. Paul’s actions were met with a loud noise of boos as Murray grinned hard while going to the line. Even on social media, fans have expressed their discontent with the veteran guard’s foul play. While some have said that it should’ve been called a flagrant, some are demanding Paul’s suspension too.
Although the Suns have lost Game 1, they haven’t been in the dark about coming back from a series deficit. In fact, in their series win against the Clippers too, Phoenix had lost their first game. In that series, however, they ended up going on a four-game winning streak to advance to the Western semifinals. Despite the Nuggets posing a threat with their early lead, with the likes of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker the Suns are still very much in the series. Durant has been one of the playoff greats while Booker has put up consistent 40+ points performances for his side. It will be interesting to see how the Phoenix Suns regroup and come back for Game 2.
