Not a long time ago, Stephen Curry claimed that he is in the top two point guards category as he announced on Gil’s Arena, where he famously said, “Yes. It’s me and Magic. That is the conversation” on being asked “Are you the best Point Guard?”. Some supported his claim, like Stephen A. Smith, while some rejected it, like Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who is famous for his ‘unleashed’ claims on the internet.

Comparing Johnson and Curry, Russo said, “He is not Magic Johnson. I’m sorry. He’s not in the same discussion. That is blasphemy to put him in Magic Johnson’s category.” Blasting Curry for his non-conventional point guard style, he called him out, saying that Johnson was the real point guard who would get his teammate a shot as soon as he passed the half-court. According to him, Johnson is in the “top 3-4” in the history of the NBA, so comparing him with Curry would yield no result.

Talking about what a point guard should do, which Curry does not, he said, “What is the definition of a Point Guard? When you cross mid-court, your first objective is to get a teammate a good shot … Curry’s first objective in a lot of ways is what 35-footer I can make.” Later, he clarified that there’s nothing wrong with Curry’s playstyle, he just said that it is not what a point guard should do.

The Magic Johnson vs Stephen Curry debate

Even though the two played in different eras and the comparison between the two might be fruitless, but it’s essential to look at the statistics and see the impact they have created in their teams. While Johnson has had an illustrious career of 13 seasons, Curry is on his path to playing his 15th season, and it looks like he is not stopping anytime soon.

Rings-wise, Johnson is ahead of Curry, but just by one. As Curry looks to bag more in the upcoming years, it does not look like a distant dream that he will soon surpass the big man in terms of rings. While Curry has the better stats regarding shooting and on-field goals, Johnson beats him in assists and rebounds.

Curry is regarded as the person who transformed the game and the position. While many would not agree with his playing style, there’s no denying that he has led the Warriors to four rings in the past few years. Ending it once and for all, Russo set it in stone, “I love Curry … But there is nobody in the history of NBA who is a better point guard than Magic Johnson.” While the playing styles of each are different, and one can argue for both of them to be the GOATs, it’s still uncanny how much attention people give to comparing.
