The NBA is a male-dominated league. There is a reason why there is a separate league in the WNBA, so that women are also represented in the sport, and basketball isn’t seen as a men’s sport. While women hold multiple key roles in various franchises, such as Jeanie Buss, who is the owner of the LA Lakers, the game hasn’t seen a woman head coach in its history.

Only Becky Hammon has ever been an assistant coach in the league, working under the legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, but she left the league to join the WNBA team, the Las Vegas Aces. The scarcity of women coaches in the league was described by a veteran NBA coach, who said that the NBA was a very sexist environment.

He said, “You can’t have a hot woman [coaching] in the NBA. Guys will be trying to f— her every day. By and large the NBA is an incredibly sexist environment.”

The source also mentioned that he has heard players talk about women, and it disturbs him, especially considering that he has a daughter. He added that this is normal because most men in society aren’t comfortable working under a woman, and if a woman becomes the head coach of a franchise, some players would have a problem with that decision by the franchise.

“ I listen to players talk about women. I have a daughter and it’s sometimes disturbing. But it’s nothing new. It hasn’t gotten worse over the years. In our society there are men uncomfortable working under women and a handful of our players would have a problem with it,” he added.

There are many candidates who could fit the role well, but the best candidate for the role would be Becky Hammon. Hammon, who has worked under the five-time championship-winning coach Gregg Popovich as an associate coach, used her experience to transition to the role of head coach for the Las Vegas Aces and won the WNBA championship in her first year as head coach.

Becky Hammon is the sole woman to have coached an NBA regular-season game. She took the helm during a game for the San Antonio Spurs, substituting for Coach Popovich, and assumed the role of head coach for the Spurs in a match against the Los Angeles Lakers after Coach Popovich was ejected during the first half of the game.

She served as an assistant coach for the Spurs for a remarkable eight seasons. Her extensive background as a WNBA player for 16 years, coupled with her on-court expertise and coaching experience, made her the perfect candidate for the role.
