“Russ is from LA and he’s never been worse” Colin Cowherd says Donovan Mitchell to New York Knicks makes ZERO sense

Utah Jazz traded their star center Rudy Gobert to the Timberwolves, and as per reports, ready to listen to offers for yet another mega star – Donovan Mitchell. The Jazz team is looking to rebuild after successive failures in the postseason. Given that this spoken off, 25-year-old guard is available in the trade market, the New York Knicks are reportedly looking at the options to make a move. Mitchell would be a great addition to any team, especially with the attacking options already present in the roster. But sports analyst Colin Cowherd believes it does not make any basketball sense.

New York has been one of the more active teams during the offseason as they are entering into the 50th year of Championship draught. So any additions do not feel like enough for fans to make the Knicks a strong contender. They ended the 2022 season with a 37-45 record, and couldn’t make it into the postseason. If the team is going to cement itself as one of the NBA’s elite teams, another move is likely required. There have been talks about Mitchell going to the Knicks since before his extension.

Colin Cowherd details the mistake of signing Donovan Mitchell

What would go wrong if a team adds talented young stars to their roaster? Nothing as far as the “normal eye” would see, but as per analyst Colin Cowherd, trading for Donovan Mitchell would be a huge mistake for 2-time NBA champions Knicks.

Cowherd believes that trade for Mitchell does not make sense for New York. On his show, Cowherd said“They just acquired Jalen Brunson. That would give the Knicks two small, ball-centric guards who don’t play defense. It doesn’t make any basketball sense, but it’d be a great headline. I know, I know. New Yorkers are saying, “Colin, come on, man, he’s from New York.”

But Colin reminded those fans, “Westbrook’s from LA; he’s never been worse. That doesn’t matter. Nobody cares where you’re from.” In reality, it is true that an athlete’s success wouldn’t depend on his birthplace. And New York Knicks are also familiar with the situation.

New York Knicks’ situation with Donovan Mitchell is similar to that of Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo Anthony is also a New York native and played college basketball in the state. Colin Cowherd added former scoring champion Melo in the discussion as he said, “It would feel like the Carmelo Anthony deal a little bit. You’d have to gut a little bit of the roster and a little bit of the house to bring in the chandelier, right. You’d have to get rid of some of your draft picks. You’d have to get rid of maybe an RJ Barrett, but it would make you more relevant.”

There is nothing wrong with 3-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell, as he remains one of the top players in the league. In his 5-year career with Jazz, he averaged 24 points, with 4 assists, and 4 rebounds per game. They did make it to the playoffs every time he played 50+ games for the franchise, but as per Cowherd, he would not fit in the New York team system as of now.

58-year-old Cowherd added, “I don’t think it makes a ton of basketball sense to have Donovan and Jalen Brunson, both undersized, neither much defensively, $55 million combined salaries, eats up most of your cap”

After the other moves the Jazz has made this offseason, trading away Mitchell seems possible. They are going for a rebuild and need some future picks for the same. But Knicks may not be a perfect solution. Given that the Knicks could end up with a near-empty bench after trading everything to acquire Mitchell, depth could become an issue again.
