Brittney Griner’s arrest in Russia has completely changed from a possible drug smuggling case to diplomatic one. The ashes of which has urged NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to assist the WNBA in its efforts to bring back their Tom Brady safely to homeland. The legal relations between Russia and US have never constantly been on good terms. And now with Brittney Griner being trapped in the former country since February, tensions have been rising. Earlier there were reports of Russia wanting to have ‘Merchant of Death’ Viktor Bout in exchange of Griner. Moreover, Silver said before the NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago that he’s “working side-by-side” with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who’s made bringing Griner back to the US a top priority.

“The league and by that, both the WNBA and its brother league, the NBA — we have a huge responsibility to Brittney Griner as one of our players,” Silver said. “Cathy Engelbert, the commissioner of the WNBA, is on this issue every single day. I’m working side-by-side with her.”

Moreover, the NBA Commissioner says both leagues have gone above and beyond for the Phoenix Mercury star getting “in touch with the White House, the State Department, hostage negotiators at every level of government and also through the private sector as well.”

Concluding that Brittney Griner is No. 1 priority of the United States at this time, Silver assured that a decision can be sooner rather than later. To those who are not aware, the Phoenix Mercury star was detained by the authority in Moscow airport. The 31-year-old star was denied house arrest by a court judge and was ruled to be in the jail for at least 30 more days.

The main question here remains when would Griner come back safely to her land, especially when the tension between US and Russia are constantly rising?
