“What a way to trade Russian war criminal” Controversial UFC Fighter takes shot at US Government at Brittney Griner’s expense

Brittney Griner and people in support of her

Since February 17th, Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia while she awaits trial for “large-scale drug transportation.” She, along with several others, had pleaded with President Joe Biden to return her and other American prisoners of war to their “home” countries. Griner, a WNBA player, is getting both criticism and praise from the sports community, notably from UFC fighters, who have dubbed the basketball star’s actions as “ironic” and “despicable.”

Tim Kennedy, a former UFC fighter, was not pleased with the WNBA player situation. In the last month, he spoke a few things about her as the military veteran posted another message about Griner on his Instagram account now that there are discussions about reaching an agreement with Russia. Kennedy thinks it is hypocritical for Griner to ask the American government for support and assistance after she was one of the players who knelt during the national anthem to show their opposition to the use of force by the police against Black people in the country.

Does Brittney Griner deserve to be returned home?

Brittney Griner, a 6-foot-9 centre and eight-time WNBA all-star, is one of the top women’s basketball players in the world. In her nine seasons, she has twice led the league in both points per game and blocks per game. Griner rose to fame while playing collegiate basketball at Baylor University, when she set a record by being the seventh woman in NCAA history to dunk in a game. Off the court, Griner became the first out gay athlete to sign an endorsement contract with Nike in 2013, shortly after she was chosen with the first pick in the WNBA draft.

Brittney Griner has been held by Russian officials since Feb. 17, when they apprehended her at Sheremetyevo International Airport south of Moscow on suspicion of possessing cannabis oil-containing vape cartridges, which are prohibited in that country. Griner plays overseas during the WNBA summer to increase her salary and keep her talents sharp, like many other women’s basketball players do. At the time of her arrest, Griner was playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League. The trial for “large-scale drug transportation,” which in Russia carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, is taking place against the 31-year-old Griner.

Tim Kennedy had previously expressed his displeasure with the basketball star due to her attitude about the US national anthem. Additionally, he said something quite divisive about Griner being “sober” in light of the current difficulties. He recently posted a meme with in his post that had a caption, “People in the US in jail for weed while the government trades a Russian war criminal to free a woman’s basketball player in jail for weed.” Kennedy, despite his loathing for Griner, thinks the athlete shouldn’t spend up to 10 years in prison, he added in an earlier post.

Griner, perhaps one of the best female basketball players around, was held in Moscow at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on suspicion of drug use, but there is insufficient evidence to support these claims. According to some sources, Griner may spend 10 years behind bars. Recent reports, however, indicate that the Biden Administration is attempting to extradite her from Russia. According to reports, the foreign minister of Russia will shortly recommend a time for a discussion on the prisoner swap.
