In one of the most shocking incidents of this off-season, Damian Lillard requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers after spending 12 years with the franchise. Dame specifically asked the franchise to trade him to the Miami Heat, where he could partner up with Jimmy Butler. He and his agent, Aaron Goodwin, privately informed teams interested in him to stay out of the trade deal, as they would receive an unhappy player if they did trade for him.

The NBA was not too keen on Dame’s use of these tactics to manipulate the trade market and issued a memo to all 30 teams. The memo highlighted media reports stating that Goodwin warned multiple teams not to trade for Lillard because he only wanted to go to Miami. It also addressed Goodwin’s public comments about Dame not being happy if traded anywhere except Miami.

The NBA personally spoke with Lillard, Goodwin, and the teams Goodwin spoke to. Goodwin asserted that he did not indicate in any way that Lillard would fail to fulfill his player duties if traded anywhere. Both Lillard and Goodwin confirmed that Lillard would fulfill his duties under his player contract regardless of the trade destination.

We interviewed Goodwin and Lillard and also spoke with several NBA teams to whom Goodwin spoke. Goodwin denied stating or indicating to any team that Lillard would refuse to play for them. Goodwin and Lillard affirmed to us that Lillard would fully perform the services called for under his player contract in any trade scenario,” NBA said.

The memo also mentioned that Goodwin or Lillard would face strict disciplinary actions if they make any similar comments suggesting that Lillard wouldn’t fully perform his duties unless traded to Miami. Furthermore, the NBA warned the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) that they would subject any player or their agent who makes such comments to disciplinary action.

Ever since Damian Lillard requested a trade, it has become apparent that he desires to be traded exclusively to the Miami Heat, a team that recently reached the NBA Finals. Throughout his remarkable career, Dame has been an incredible player, averaging a whopping 32.2 points last season, yet he hasn’t had many opportunities to compete for, let alone win, the NBA championship.

Trail Blazers GM Joe Cronin isn’t fond of Dame’s request for a trade to Miami and isn’t keen on taking action on it. He outrightly stated that the team will be patient and look for the most beneficial offer. He doesn’t care if it takes months.“What I’ve learned more than anything is patience is critical… We’re going to be patient, we’re going to do what’s best for our team… And if it takes months, it takes months,” Cronin said.

The NBA has recently issued a memo, warning of potential disciplinary measures against Damian Lillard if he fails to comply with his player contract. This development has sparked immense anticipation among fans, as Lillard can now be traded to any team, and he will be obliged to play for the new franchise under the threat of consequences should he resist.
