Damian Lillard has been enchanting the NBA world with his hooping mastery for quite some time. When not making noise on the court, the Portland Trail Blazers superstar can be found mixing it up in the studio. Switching to his alter ego, Dame D.O.L.L.A, the point guard has released multiple bangers since stepping into the world of rap.
The Blazers recently shut down Lillard for the remainder of the season after the Rip City Express collapsed before reaching its intended destination: the playoffs. Given this, the player appears to have a lot of spare time since he recently decided to drop a freestyle rap called ‘Heaven or Hell.’ And one verse’s lyrics are bound to boil up some intrigue on social media.
“Plotting on a ring, they say ‘I should do the Lakers. F*** that loyal s***,’ what if Reggie left the Pacers,” the verse said. Lillard rapped on how numerous people want him to abandon the Blazers and join the Los Angeles Lakers in a bid to eventually win the NBA championship. The seven-time All-Star then stressed Reggie Miller’s loyalty to the Indiana Pacers, highlighting that he devoted his entire career to the franchise.
Over his 18-year NBA career, Miller gave it his all for the Pacers. He is one of just five NBA players who spent their entire career (18 or more seasons) with the same team. And despite not winning a ring, the only thing his remarkable NBA career screams is loyalty.
Lillard is on the same course, displaying signs of his commitment to the Blazers at every turn. For more than a decade, he has been the Blazers’ jewel. And regardless of countless disappointments and heartbreaking season exits, Lillard continues to set the bar high with his unwavering commitment to the franchise. In fact, based on what he rapped in his track, he may continue on the same path.
Damian Lillard believes he’ll never get credit for what he’s done unless he wins a title
Damian Lillard has been with Portland Trail Blazers through thick and thin. The point guard hasn’t had the success in a Blazers outfit that he must have envisioned when he was drafted in 2012. Nonetheless, his commitment to the franchise never wavered.
Lillard stated in February on the “Point Forward” podcast, hosted by Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner, that he is aware of the consequences of his decision to remain faithful to the Blazers. He highlighted how he’ll never get the credit he deserves unless he wins a title with the team.“They’ll never give me credit for what I’ve done… unless I just come out here and win a championship for Portland… They better pray I don’t win a championship for the Blazers,” Lillard said.
Many argue that just because winning a championship is what cements a player’s legacy, the loyalty act should be dropped. However, that is what Lillard has built his entire career on. Adamant on surging in the glory days in Portland, the lone wolf has marched alone.
He knows he will not be fully acknowledged for his exploits throughout his career merely because the current “legacy” conversation is fixated on championships. Nevertheless, when he retires, Lillard wants to be remembered for the principles he upheld.
“I want to be remembered for who I was, not as a player but the principal that I stood on regardless how successful I was, how major the failure was, the criticism or what people thought I should have done. What people think of me and who they don’t think I’m better like no matter what was happening, I want to be remembered for who I was,” Lillard added.
