Damian Lillard has recently been the talk of the town due to his stalled trade request. He recently appeared on a podcast to give his opinion on another highly debated and controversial topic: the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers bubble championship. Lillard was at the top of his game in 2020, averaging 30.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 66 games in 2019–20. He was selected to play in his fifth All-Star game.

The NBA season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NBA took matters into its own hands and coughed up $190 million to protect the 2019–20 season following the season’s suspension on March 11, 2020. The season was resumed inside a bio-safe “bubble” in Walt Disney World. The remaining eight games of the regular season were played before the playoffs commenced in order to determine the seeding of the teams. The season ended with the Los Angeles Lakers winning it all against the Miami Heat in six games during the NBA finals.

Many fans and media personalities state that there should be an asterisk around the bubble championship for the Lakers and that it really shouldn’t count. This is due to the fact that there were no fans present in the arena, crowd sounds were added in, along with the fact that players may not have been at their best due to the mental aspect of it.

Not being able to go outside the bubble and not seeing their respective families for three months. Others argue that it is the purest form of basketball played, as there were no outside factors such as intimidation by crowds, etc., and it came down purely to a team’s ability to hoop.

Damian Lillard recently chimed in on this topic while appearing on the “2Cool2Blog” podcast. He stated, “I felt like that was the best version of me version of me to that point. So, like, I don’t understand what people mean when they talkin about it ain’t credited. I feel like it would’ve been hard to win that cuz people was fresh bruh.”

Lillard was referring to the extended break players received due to the suspension of the NBA season in March. He added, “You gotta look at it like this; why don’t it count? Nobody else won it. Everybody else had the same opportunity. Everybody else had the same opportunity to win it so why didn’t they win it?”

How was the NBA bubble different from a regular NBA season?

Fans around the league to this day argue about the credibility of the Bubble ring won by the Lakers. The situation the players were in was unprecedented and was something that hadn’t been seen before, so let’s take a deeper look at it.

The 2020 NBA bubble was a bio-secure bubble at Walt Disney World in Bay Lake. Its goal for being created was to allow the regular progression of an NBA season with the playoffs being played, all while making sure the players and staff alike were kept safe from the COVID-19 pandemic that was rampant at the time. 22 out of 30 NBA teams were invited, as the other eight had been removed from playoff contention. After a few exhibition games, each team played eight regular season games in order to determine seeding.

There were various rules that came into play, as players needed to undergo isolation periods and testing requirements, and new financial penalties were factored in in order to maintain the sanctity of the bubble. There was a hotline set up where people could make anonymous calls to report players who had broken the rules of the bubble. There were no crowds and virtual crowds were brought into place, with sound effects being added in.

This virtually took away the home-court advantage and intimidation that an away team’s crowd could bring, basing the deciding factor solely on how well a team played. Due to this, the Lakers’ win is heavily criticized. The champions that season were the Los Angeles Lakers, who defeated the Miami Heat in the finals within six games, with LeBron James being named the Finals MVP.
