In a remarkable move by the Bucks’ front office, Damian Lillard will be joining 2x MVP and 2021 NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee. According to reports by Adrian Wojnarowski, the Milwaukee Bucks, who had recently become involved with the Blazers for a potential Lillard trade, have finalised a deal and acquired Dame, snatching him away from the Miami Heat. The trade involves the Bucks, the Blazers, and the Phoenix Suns.
The trade sees Dame getting traded to the Bucks, the Blazers receiving Jrue Holiday, DeAndre Ayton, Toumani Camara (for salary), a 2029 First Round pick, and unprotected pick swap rights in 2028 and 2030. The Phoenix Suns receive Jusuf Nurkic, who their new coach Frank Vogel was aiming for, alongside Grayson Allen, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson. This trade solidifies both the Bucks and the Suns as title contenders, with one acquiring a superstar and the other gaining much-needed depth.
This trade might just disappoint Heat fans, considering that Milwaukee only gave up one first-round pick, two pick swaps, Jrue Holiday, and Grayson Allen. The Bucks were already looking to move on from Jrue due to his poor playoff scoring. Now, with Dame traded to Milwaukee, it elevates the Bucks to a scoring threat from all positions on the floor and won’t require Giannis to carry the team to success.
Why did the Milwaukee Bucks make such a surprise trade?
The Milwaukee Bucks had to make a significant trade this offseason because Giannis had given the franchise an ultimatum. He stated that if they wanted him to stay in Milwaukee, they would have to build a serious contender around him. Giannis aimed to recreate the championship victory he had in 2021 and mentioned that he might consider a better situation with another team if offered. Even Brian Windhorst reported that Giannis’ next contract might not be with Milwaukee. Those rumors might now be ending for good.
After the Bucks traded away Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen for Damian Lillard, this move signified their commitment to keeping Giannis in Milwaukee. With Dame, they have a proven playoff performer unlike Jrue, along with an elite offensive guard who could make the Bucks almost unstoppable, complementing their lockdown defense and the incredible big man duo of Brook Lopez and Giannis driving to the rim. While this trade does deplete their defense in the guard position, the positives on the offensive end far outweigh the defensive liabilities. This trade instantly makes the Bucks one of the favorites, if not the favorite, to win the championship next season.
