Damian Lillard has been loyal to the Portland Trail Blazers for nine seasons, but he is not satisfied with the status quo. The six-time All-Star wants to see the Blazers make some major moves this offseason to improve their chances of competing for a championship, or he might consider leaving the team that drafted him.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Lillard has a “dream scenario” in mind that would keep him happy in Portland: re-signing forward Jerami Grant and signing four-time All-Star and four-time champion Draymond Green in free agency.
“So, what would it take to convince Damian Lillard that Portland is still the place to be for the rest of his NBA days?” Amick wrote. “Here’s one solution that is known to be a dream scenario from Lillard’s vantage point: Re-sign forward Jerami Grant and add four-time All-Star/four-time champion Draymond Green in free agency.”
Grant, who averaged 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season for the Blazers, is an unrestricted free agent. He proved crucial for them last season, chipping in with some scoring and versatility at the forward position. Green, who opted out of his 2023-24 player option with the Golden State Warriors, is one of the best defenders and playmakers in the league.
However, this scenario is far from realistic, as the Blazers have limited cap space and would need to make some drastic moves to clear enough room to offer both Grant and Green lucrative contracts.
Blazers’ chances of pairing Damian Lillard and Draymond Green
The Blazers’ chances of landing Green are not very high, considering the obstacles they face in terms of cap space, competition, and Green’s loyalty to the Warriors.
The Blazers would need to clear enough salary to offer Green a competitive contract or work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Warriors that would benefit both sides. The latter option seems unlikely, as the Warriors would not want to help a rival team in their conference get better.
Therefore, while Damian Lillard might dream of teaming up with Green in Portland, it seems like a long shot at best. The Blazers might have to look for other ways to improve their roster and convince Lillard to stay loyal or risk losing him sooner or later.
