Two players from the 2019 NBA draft have been constantly compared to each other and have had similar trajectories: Tyler Herro and Jordan Poole. They both got massive contract extensions in the 2022 offseason. D’Angelo Russell, who was talking on the Pat Bev Podcast hosted by Patrick Beverley, voiced his opinions about his first thoughts on Poole.
Russell said on the podcast, “Honestly, I didn’t see that…I didn’t know he [Jordan Poole] was going to be as nice as he was.” According to him, he never knew that Poole was going to be as good of a player as he is now when he first saw Poole. Continuing the conversation, he clarified the interplay between other players and Poole, which led to Poole’s trade to the Washington Wizards.
Moreover, in the latter part of the podcast, Russell clarified his stance on which player he likes more, Tyler Herro or Jordan Poole. “I remember it was him and Tyler Herro, and we were all talking, and I was like, ‘I think Tyler might be better than him.’ And [Draymond Green] was like, ‘Nah, I don’t know JP got some s**t.'”
How did D’Angelo Russell change his opinion about Jordan Poole?
It was not until Draymond Green, ironically, had convinced him of the caliber that Jordan Poole possessed. Until Green had said that Poole “got some sh*t,” Russell revealed how he considered the young man not up to the mark and felt Tyler Herro to be better than him.
Market value-wise, Poole signed a $128 Million deal with the Warriors but was traded to the Wizards. At the same time, Herro scored a $120 Million contract, $8 Million less than his counterpart’s amount. Poole has become a clutch player, averaging 19.5 points while shooting 43.8% from the field and pulling his team out of many not-so-winnable situations.
One more reason why the Jordan Poole vs. Tyler Herro debate is important is that these players will likely become impact players for their respective organizations in the future. As Poole gears up for this season, becoming the cornerstone for the Washington Wizards, Herro too can land up in a similar situation if he lands up in some other team due to the Damian Lillard trade.
