D’Angelo Russell is having a resurgent run this month. The Los Angeles Lakers star has been scoring 20+ points consistently since he was inserted into the starting lineup. This was after teammate Cam Reddish went down with an injury in the game against the Utah Jazz earlier this month. His confidence has been such that he even denied his megastar teammate LeBron James a shot and took it himself.

During the double-overtime thriller against the Golden State Warriors, Taurean Prince grabbed a rebound and passed it to Russell who was streaking towards the Warriors half. LeBron James was one step behind Russell on the fast break, and had had a brilliant game himself. As per video footage, James is seen calling Russell from behind saying;

I got it.

Russell ignored the call from James, stopped at the three-point line, and launched a three without any hesitation. The shot was contested by a reeling Draymond Green. The ball went through the net and drew a smirk from Russell.

Russell was smiling ear to ear while driving with the basket in transition. Such was the level of his confidence that he ignored the calls from his much more illustrious teammate. James was on a hot streak himself. The Lakers were down 2 points when this play developed. Had the shot not gone in, the result could have been different at the end of the night.

So to dribble down the court, ignore your hot-handed leader, and pull up a three while down two, showcases a high level of confidence. It speaks to the mindset of Russell who was once not playing well enough even from the bench. His reinsertion to the starting lineup has changed his career at this stage.

Fans watch as Russell’s confidence grows every game

This footage of the play has garnered almost 6 million times by fans. Not often does D’Angelo Russell get to claim such viewership when surrounded by much more accomplished teammates. The fact that the Lakers official Twitter handle found the sequence worthy enough to be posted, speaks of the confidence they have in Russell.
