“That’s why we need him” Darvin Ham hilariously recruits Matt Barnes to ‘slap the sh*t’ out of Lakers players
Darvin Ham fun moment with Matt Barnes
Los Angeles Lakers are looking to make adjustments in the roaster after the disastrous 2022 season. They are even looking to change the coaching staff that led them to the 2020 NBA Championship. They replaced Coach, Frank Vogel with Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham and also added young guns to their roasters. This is Darvin’s 1st head coach job, but he seems settled in quickly. He looked confident at the time of his introductory press conference, while very recently at the summer league games he was with former Lakers champion Matt Barnes, where he looked relaxed. Did Barnes’ presence mean his reunion with the Los Angeles Lakers? Well, if we go by the opinion of the Lakers’ new head coach Darvin Ham, it looks like he would love the former NBA forward on his coaching staff.
Fans captured the moment on video and it went viral quickly. Ham and Barnes met at the Las Vegas Summer League and shared some fun moments. At one moment, Ham shared a funny recruiting pitch for Barnes, mentioning that he would love to have a guy like Barnes to help straighten the players when they are acting out – a strong personality to keep players in check.
“That’s what we need. Somebody to slap the sh*t out of somebody,” Ham said while laughing. Many Lakers fans are familiar with this “Barnes beating the s**t” out of someone’s storyline. And as per his intro pitch, Ham is all in for that kind of attitude in his coaches.
Los Angeles Lakers are making some smart moves to revive their franchise
After winning the 2020 NBA Championship, Los Angeles Lakers were favorites on most of the analyst’s lists. But things were different on the court, as injuries kept LeBron James and Anthony Davis out for a significant number of games in the following 2 seasons, affecting the Lakers’ outputs. They recruited Darvin Ham as their head coach, who is known for his no-nonsense attitude and his strictness to instill discipline in players.
Helping Milwaukee in the 2021 NBA Championship run, Ham is also known for his competitive drive and players can expect him to be honest and really push them to the best of his abilities. That is why he landed the Lakers’ head coaching gig.
In the assistant coaches position, Ham assimilated assistant coaches Phil Handy and Quinton Crawford as holdovers from coach Frank Vogel’s staff, as per reports, while former Hawks assistant coach Chris Jent joins team Ham. Also Ham’s former mate at Milwaukee Bucks, Schuyler Rimmer announced that he is now with the LA Lakers, and Nets Jordan Ott is also roped in.
After such additions, it remains to be seen if we will actually see Barnes as part of the Lakers in one way or another, but it is worth remembering that he is a really vocal player who doesn’t know how to hold back his thoughts.
On the players’ front also Lakers have invested in the young stars, with Juan Toscano Anderson, Lonnie Walker IV, Scottie Pippen Jr, and Kostas Antetokounmpo to name a few. They still have 9 roaster spots available to fill in, and the possibility of adding 2016 NBA Champion Kyrie Irving is also on cards.
