Deandre Ayton gets hit on his Jaw by Rookie Herbert Jones

Suns star forward Deandre Ayton was stunned due to pain when he got a hard shoulder hit from the Pelicans rookie Herbert Jones in the fourth quarter of the Game 1 against the New Orleans on Sunday night.

The Suns vs Pelicans game was full of drama, where despite getting a slow start New Orleans managed to cut the 23 points deficits to 79-71 till the end of the third quarter. Well now, the game went into the last quarter where the Suns guard Chris Paul took the control of the game and brought the victory by 110-99 for the team through his 19-point performance in the fourth quarter. Moreover, there was one more drama that halted the game for a few minutes.

The incident happened in the late fourth quarter when the Pelicans’ center Jonas Valanciunas’ put a poster dunk on the Suns with only 3:53 remaining. After this point, the possession was with the Suns and their center Deandre Ayton who was defending the arc started moving for the offense to the other side but he didn’t see rookie Herbert Jones crossing his path due to which he got a hard hit on his jaw from Jones’ shoulder.

At that moment no one noticed it until Ayton faltered on his way to the offense and dazzled on the court. Later, when officials watch the clips of the collision it looked like Jones was trying to pick up Chris Paul early and another clip showed the impact of hit on the Ayton’s face. After reviewing the play the officials ruled it incidental contact and the crowd present in the arena went crazy and started booing.

When the 6’11 center was asked about the hit he said “I’m fine, that’s how they want to start the series then, so be it, it’s a physical game. It’s the playoffs. Hits like that count. Regular season, you’ve got 81 more after a game like that, but we’re in the playoffs.”

Later Ayton also explained that he was not mad at rookie Herbert. “It didn’t look like he did it intentional,” the Suns’ center said. “So I’m not really, it’s part of the game. I’m not really going crazy over any hit.”
