The feeling and the desire to play at home, amidst your crowd, are different. As testified by several players through generations, it is one of the best feelings. DeMar DeRozan, at one point in time, found an offer so lucrative that he almost got to feel it. DeRozan, born in Compton, a town in Los Angeles, California, was looking for a way back to his hometown. Recently, in an episode of Podcast P with Paul George, DeRozan revealed all the secrets of this time.
DeMar DeRozan and Paul George, both Los Angeles natives, were brought back together on Podcast P with George. The duo had conversations on a multitude of topics, but one hit home, quite literally. George brought up the topic of DeRozan’s desire to play in front of his home crowd. George initiated, “Started in Compton, then onto SC. At any point, do you wanna find yourself back home?” DeRozan replied, “I used to feel like that. I used to think like ‘man I gotta so I could see what it’s like. But I get it from both ways now (Clippers and Chicago)’”. DeRozan added, “I’m at this stage now where it isn’t the ultimate desire.”
The duo then moved on to talk about the time when George and the Clippers pushed hard to recruit DeRozan. George said, “I remember I was trying hard as s*it to recruit you. After it was done, I felt like a sucker. In Chicago, I came to you, I was like, ‘Bro, that was some buls**t.’”
George then highlighted how they didn’t care about the business side of it as they put forward a ‘blind offer.’ He then said, “I didn’t know what we had to offer. It was just, ‘Yo, we got interest in bringing DeMar here. Hell yeah, let’s go get that.’ When I actually did the numbers of what we could offer, obviously, you deserve way more than that. I just felt like, ‘Damn, I really tried to get the homie to come here on the low.’ It was bulls**t.”
DeRozan then spoke about how even he was in on the idea of playing back home alongside his friends. He said, “First time I seen (George) after that, he was like, ‘Man, my bad’. “And I never even took it in no disrespectful type of way because in that moment I was like, ‘Man, hell yeah. Let’s figure it out.’” DeRozan then also spoke about the “business side” that George was referring to. He said, “The business side of it just was flawed in its own right. But me just looking at like, ‘Man, damn. I could do this? Play with my dog (at) home? Alright, let’s try to figure it out.”
How DeMar DeRozan’s 2021 Free-Agency biggest topic of discussion in the league and for the Clippers
DeMar DeRozan emerged as one of the most sought-after players in NBA free agency in 2021. The summer of 2021 saw several teams expressing interest in acquiring him. With his impressive track record as a six-time All-Star, this came as no surprise. While all the trade possibilities were being considered, the possibility of returning to his hometown of Los Angeles to join the Los Angeles Clippers was the most interesting. However, DeRozan ultimately made the decision to sign with the Chicago Bulls, inking a substantial three-year contract worth $82 million.
In the podcast, Paul George also highlighted how Kawhi Leonard was in on the idea of playing alongside DeRozan for the Clippers. “What if” the LA trio played together is a question we might not have an answer to, but that doesn’t mean it’ll never happen.
DeRozan goes into free agency again, after the next season… and who knows, LA might be the next destination?
