Florida Democrats have a big problem: They can’t seem to find a strong candidate to challenge Republican Sen. Rick Scott in 2024. So they’re looking at some unconventional options, like former NBA stars Dwyane Wade and Grant Hill.

Wade is a legend in Florida, where he led the Miami Heat to three NBA titles and made 13 All-Star appearances. He is also admired for his off-court work, such as his charity, his advocacy, and his support for his daughter Zaya, who came out as transgender. Some Democrats think Wade could be the perfect candidate to energize their base and attract young and diverse voters in Florida, a key battleground state that has gone to Trump twice and where Scott won two tight races already.

Wade is not the only former NBA player on their radar. Hill, another Hall of Famer who played for the Orlando Magic and now owns part of the Atlanta Hawks, is also on their wish list.

But NBA Twitter is not buying it. They think Wade and Hill should stick to basketball and stay away from politics, especially in a state that has been leaning red and where Wade’s transgender daughter might not feel safe.

Here are some of the tweets that show how NBA fans feel about the idea of Wade running for Senate in Florida:

Does Dwyane Wade live in Florida?

No. Dwyane Wade has a simple reason for not living in Florida anymore: his daughter Zaya.

Wade, who has four children, said that his family would not feel accepted or comfortable in Florida, where Republican Sen. Rick Scott and former President Donald Trump have strong support. “My family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there,” Wade said. “And so that’s one of the reasons why I do not live there.

Wade retired from basketball in 2019 after a 16-year career that included 13 All-Star appearances and a scoring title with the Heat. He remains involved in the game as a part-owner of the Utah Jazz and a commentator for TNT.

Florida Democrats are hoping that Wade or another former NBA star, Grant Hill, will challenge Scott in 2024. But Wade has not expressed any interest or intention to run for office.
