In a thrilling game at the FIBA World Cup 2023, Germany showcased resilience by bouncing back from a challenging first quarter to secure a convincing 100-71 victory over Slovenia on Sunday. With both teams having already secured their quarter-final spots, this match was about more than just advancing, it was about pride and momentum.
The game was not without drama. A tension-filled moment occurred in the first quarter when German point guard Dennis Schroder was visibly involved in a disagreement with head coach Gordon Herbert. While trailing 11-16 with just over four minutes left in the quarter, a timeout revealed a dispute between the two.
The confrontation started with Schroder engaged in a discussion with teammate Daniel Theis, seemingly neglecting Coach Herbert’s strategic insights. The situation escalated when Herbert tried to get Schroder to take a seat by physically urging him, leading to the Raptors guard’s stern warning, “Never touch me like that.”
Despite the heated exchange, Schroder made his way back onto the court post-timeout, and his presence on the court was undeniable as he went on to produce a standout performance.

Germany rallies back, keeping their unbeaten streak
Slovenia’s Luka Doncic had a strong start, scoring 12 points in the initial quarter, helping Slovenia to a 25-11 lead. However, Germany showcased their prowess by making a remarkable comeback.
With Schröder spearheading the offense, Germany turned the tables in the second quarter by outscoring Slovenia 27-9. Doncic tried to rally his team with a final stat totaling 23 points, six rebounds, and six assists, but the German team’s momentum was unstoppable. Consecutive runs of 11 and seven points were pivotal in gaining a 38-34 half-time lead. By the start of the third quarter, Germany had already established a commanding 19-point lead.
Schroder put on an incredible display, scoring 24 points and ten assists in just 25 minutes of gameplay. This followed his impressive performance against Australia, making him one of only two Germans to surpass the 30-point mark in a World Cup game.
With this win, Germany emerges as Group K’s top team and is set to challenge the Group L runners-up, Latvia, in the eagerly awaited quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Slovenia is getting ready to take on the winners of the match between Spain and Canada.
