Usually, when a player makes it into the NBA, it is certainly the start of their career but most importantly being more independent than before. With big contracts and wages, the public expects you to leave your house and pretty much live on your own. But it’s not the same case for Dereck Lively. Talking about being an NBA player and living with his mother, the Dallas Mavericks Rookie said the following:
Being able to go out there and talk about, ‘Man I’m living with my mom!’… I’m getting home cooked meals and she’s doing my laundry.
The Rookie who remains unavailable after suffering a nasal fracture in their game against Orlando Magic was at the Mavericks broadcast section in their game against the Washington Wizards. He would later go on to elaborate saying how being close to his mother, he always had someone to talk to and would always have that feeling that someone was there for him. To which, he is more than grateful for all the things she has done for him
The pair have been close to each other since that tragic childhood trauma that saw his father die of an overdose when he was still young. His mother had her own fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma for eight years, which would not only build his son into a responsible man but also a son who wishes to be with her mother and have her around.
Dereck Lively makes history with the Dallas Mavericks
Since being selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 12th overall pick of the NBA draft 2023, his rise into the NBA has been quite short-sighted, given the player has been exceptional for them.
Dereck, who was on the ACC All-Defensive team (2023) and ACC All-Freshman team (2023) during his high school career has had a rather meteoric rise into the NBA. So much so that Lively even went on to earn his first NBA Rising Stars Game selection in his Rookie season, making him the first player to earn in the Dallas Mavericks since Luka Doncic in 2019 and 2020. As far as his performances go this season, he has lived up to it averaging 9.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, which is a great sign given the rookie is only 20 years old.
But with the right guidance and mentor in the likes of his teammate, Luka Doncic, who himself is having a season of his own, there is no doubt his rise into the NBA will be acknowledged and heard for a long time.
