The Detroit Pistons are in a state of shambles. They lost their 25th straight game to a Utah Jazz team playing without most of their starters. The Pistons are now just a few more losses away from having the worst record in NBA history.

Facing a depleted Utah Jazz was bound to result in optimism in fans. They would have thought this was their chance to rebound and win their first game in 24 outings. Playing without Lauri Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Keyonte George, the Jazz were favored to lose to the Pistons. However, The Pistons ended up losing 119-111 instead, led by NBA journeyman Kelly Olynyk. Consequently, Olynyk was traded away by the franchise in the off-season. This led to their own fans chanting towards the end of the game;

Sell the Team! Sell the Team!

It is indeed a sorry state of affairs for the once-storied franchise. Their own fans chanting such words was not what the players, coach, general manager or owners would have wanted to hear.

The Detroit Pistons started the year with a lot of positivity. Hiring former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams was their first move. Williams was brought in to develop their young core of Cade Cunningham and the newly drafted Jaden Ivey. They traded for former Jazz star Bojan Bogdanovic in the off-season to help them accelerate their transition in the rebuilding phase.

Last season, the Pistons finished as the league’s worst team with a 17-65 record. Lengthy absences of star player Cunningham were one of the reasons. This season they are healthy, have a coach with NBA Finals experience, two top 5 draft picks, and off-season additions. Still, they have found themselves in an even worse position.

Can the Detroit Pistons turn their season around?

There are simply a plethora of issues the Pistons need to address quickly. The team has committed a range of turnovers, and has left their rookies with too big a scoring burden. They do not have adequate quality on the bench, and a severe lack of wing players on the roster. The team has consistently seemed to lack motivation, which has made wins extremely difficult to come by.

The reasons do not stop with the players. The coach needs to find a way to consistently motivate his team. The front office also seemingly needs a change due to their bad transactions for over 2 seasons, now. The owner needs to pacify the fans, who remain to be one of the most passionate in the league. The fact that they have consistently supported their time with rampant passion, especially during the festive season, says a lot.

Here’s hoping the Pistons find a way to win. Their fans have voiced their opinion. It’s now time for the team to deliver.
