After being dealt with in a prisoner swap, Brittney Griner‘s previous stances and comments have come under huge media scrutiny. While some social media users debated if trading her for an arms dealer was a fair arrangement, a few also begged to differ claiming that Griner hated America.

As is so frequently the case in the social media realm, the scream of mass claims becomes the words of the victims, and there is a widespread belief that Brittney Griner despises her home country. The Phoenix Mercury star was accused of hating her nation, probably because she stated that the American National Anthem did not reflect her identity.

One American News (OAN) presenter, Chanel Orion said, “So here’s what the geniuses at the Biden state department drummed up: a trade. A convicted Russian arms dealer, a.k.a. ‘Merchant of Death’, in exchange for an America-hating lesbian pothead.”

Griner has been accused of having hatred for America since 2020 when she asked for the National Anthem to not be played before WNBA games. Her protest occurred in the aftermath of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Griner also said that she would walk out of the court if the national anthem was played.

Although Griner has never openly stated that she hates America, the rumor gained traction on social media following the announcement that she was getting swapped for Viktor Bout. She did, however, say that the national anthem does not represent black people and that playing it during the WNBA season seems unnecessary.

When Brittney Griner said that she would continue her protests all season long

The Phoenix Mercury and Los Angeles Sparks walked off the floor before the national anthem began on the opening night of the 2021 WNBA season. The protest took place in the midst of police violence against the black community.

Eventually, Griner, who led the Mercury to the WNBA finals in 2021, stated that she would continue to protest throughout the entire season.

She also stated that she does not agree with playing the national anthem during WNBA season games. She did, however, state that she is proud of her country and would always stand for the national anthem during the Olympics.
