Dillon Brooks flagrant-2 foul on Gary Payton II to be further investigated by NBA

With Draymond Green having to clearly show his physicality over Brandon Clarke in Game 1, the home side knew about their evident short-comings on the floor. Perhaps, Dillon Brooks took it overboard, to say the least. In the very first quarter of Game 1 at FedExForum, brooks couldn’t live up to the hype created by the home fans as he vigorously and unnecessarily got himself thrown out of the contest by fouling Gary Payton II.

To those who missed the action-packed game, Gary Payton II found himself in an empty lane to the basket in the first quarter by getting past Morant. But Dillon Brooks decided to throw his hand from behind as Payton was in the air. As a result of which the victim fell dangerously upon his left hand, and injured his elbow. While Dillon Brooks was handed a flagrant 2 foul and was removed from the game.

Even though Gary Payton II would have wanted to continue to be part of the semi-final action, yet his injury did not allow him to do so. He was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game. This incident even got Steve Kerr frustrated as he called out Brooks for his dirty play in the interview after the first quarter.

In a tweet shared by NBA Insider Woj, the NBA is looking into the incident that led to Payton’s injury and Dillon Brooks’ ejection three minutes into the first quarter. At this point in time, the league hasn’t released a statement on the severity of Brooks’ punishment. Furthermore, Payton is out indefinitely to recover from the said injury.

Officials initially sanctioned Brooks with a flagrant foul 1. After reviewing the play, it was upgraded because the windup and impact on Payton’s head were prone to injury.
