If there is one basketball player who has always stood against or at least has had parallel views to former US President Donald Trump, it is LA Lakers star LeBron James. Things haven’t been pleasant ever between the spoken off duo, but in April2021, things seemed to get out of hands when Trump managed to publicly call out the 37-year-old veteran hooper as ‘racist’ and ‘divisive’.

When LeBron James tweeted a response to the police killing of teenager Ma’Khia Bryant of Ohio, Trump could not help but lash onto the former basketball star, only to condemn him in every possible manner. LeBron shared a photo of Nicholas Reardon, the Columbus police officer who shot dead 16-year-old Bryant, with the caption “you’re next #accountability”. However, the Laker star deleted his spoken off tweet but not before Trump was made aware of it.

Acknowledging LeBron’s comments over police brutality, Trump stated, “LeBron James should focus on basketball rather than presiding over the destruction of the NBA, which has just recorded the lowest television ratings, by far, in the long and distinguished history of the league,” the former US president said in a statement shared by American journalist Ben Jacobs on Twitter. “His racist rants are divisive, nasty, insulting and demeaning.

As demeaning as the incident was, there was no running away for the culprit. However, the killing in 2021 of the Ohio teenager triggered protests all over Columbus and initial body camera footage of the shooting was released just hours after the incident.

But this incident only went onto showcase why LeBron James and Donald Trump will never have a decent relationship with one another. Having taken shots at the other directly for the first time, Trump has only gone onto throw shades at the Los Angeles Lakers marquee in his rallies following later that year and in 2022. Most recent of which came in when Trump addressed the FINA ban on transgender swimmers in women competitions.
