“They are NASTY and very DUMB” Donald Trump called out NBA Players for kneeling during national anthem
While athletes like Colby Covington had huge admiration for former President Donald Trump, he was surely the least favorite personnel in the NBA World. While there is no surprise in knowing that plenty of NBA’s superstars are often found supporting social causes, Trump was deemed as the ‘villain’ by many. Result of which, the players themselves decided to abandon White House for a brief period of time during Trump’s tenure.
But on one particular occasion, Donald Trump decided to hit back on all the NBA players and the league itself after they kneeled during the national anthem to signify the rise of social injustice in and around the country. This was the period of time, when the Black Lives Matter movement was at its full swing during the NBA Bubble in 2020.
Donald Trump’s hatred towards NBA players
In the interview back in 2020, host Clay Travis asked former US President, Donald Trump whether he was aware about some players, particularly from the NBA, criticizing the him for his thoughts on the BLM protest during the hiatus caused by Covid-19.
Trump did not take and responded by stating, “No, I haven’t noticed them sending (criticism) back to me. I wouldn’t be surprised. There are some very, very, very nasty, frankly very dumb (players). I haven’t noticed that.”
“The kneeling, during the national anthem) has been horrible for basketball,” Trump said on Fox Sports’ Outkick the Coverage at that time. He went onto condemn the actions undertaken by NBA superstars which promoted even more people to follow them. Summarizing the issue, Trump suggested that the league is itself in deep trouble.
“They’ve had horrible ratings, low numbers. People are angry about it. They have enough politics with guys like me. There was a nastiness about the NBA the way (protesting) was done. The NBA is in trouble, bigger trouble than they understand.”
That being said, while Trump’s reign as the President might be over yet his habit of throwing shades at LeBron James has not stopped as he recently he publicly accepted to not like him, one-bit. Will we ever see Trump and the rest of the league standing on one particular social issue? Remains to be seen.
