Draymond Green made adjustments in his contract to recruit Kevin Durant.
The Golden State Warriors won the first NBA championship of the new era in 2015. The team had stars like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Andre Iguodala. In July 2016, Kevin Durant joined the already best team in the NBA. Certainly, the Warriors’ run with the new addition was destined to be legendary.
Green was a guest on the podcast 7 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony & Kid Mero. While discussing his relationship with his former teammate, Kevin Durant, Green shared some interesting facts before the Suns forward joined the Warriors. He made adjustments to his contract while considering Durant as a potential Warrior, one year before the player became a free agent.
While Green was extending his contract, the forward considered the free agents in the league. Durant was not a free agent at the time. The former had the option of a $85 million deal for five years but in the hope of getting Durant on his team in the following summer, Green asked for $82 million. Green believed that his decreasing his price, would help the Warriors sign a star player.
The Warriors went back-to-back and won in 2017 and 18. Durant’s joining took the Warriors’ talent to a different level. The team is still considered one of the most dominant and greatest teams in NBA history. Durant has only won championships with the Warriors.
Draymond Green talks about his relationship with Kevin Durant
Earlier this season, Green was suspended after an altercation with Phoenix Suns’ Jusuf Nurkic. After the game, Suns forward Durant told the press he hoped Green gets the help he needs. While talking on the same lines, KD said,
He hasn’t been that way when I was around him coming into the league. So hopefully he gets the help he needs and get back on the court and put all this stuff behind him.
Durant’s statement did not sit well with Green. The Warriors forward called out Durant on his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show.” But the 34-year-old added after thoroughly thinking about Durant’s thoughts, he concluded not to take Durant’s words negatively. The forward said on the podcast,
And when I went back through it with another lens, it’s like, maybe you shouldn’t hear help so negatively.
On the recent podcast, Green opened up more about his thoughts on KD. He said on the 7 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony & Kid Mero,
I respect KD as a basketball player. He's one of the best we've ever seen, and that's kind of where it's at. I got no ill will. I actually got nothing but love for KD, actually.
Green expressed respect for his former teammate stating no bad blood between the players. Kevin Durant and Draymond Green shared quite a few memorable moments playing together for the Warriors.
