If a player gets drafted first overall, it’s not a sure thing that they will be the best player in the league in a few years. It all depends on their hard work; otherwise, they only last for a while in the league. Draymond Green has proved that being a first or second-round pick doesn’t matter if you work hard.

Green, a second-round pick in the 2012 draft, was never expected to become a Defensive Player of the Year. He was expected to be a bench role player at best, but he proved every GM in the league wrong and became an integral part of the Golden State Warriors dynasty. He helped them win four championships, and signed a 4-year, $100 million extension with the team.

Green recently appeared on “Podcast P with Paul George” to talk about how he could have gone higher in the draft and how many GMs in the league are not as smart as they think. He dominated most workouts and was selected later because they couldn’t fit him in a position.

But the Warriors revolutionized position-less basketball, allowing Green to play from Small Forward to Center. “Most GMs are pretty f*cking dumb. I dominated the workouts. It was baffling to me that I fell in the draft,” Green said. “They said, ‘He’s too short to be a 4. He’s too slow to be a 3.'”

Draymond’s longtime teammate, Andre Iguodala, discussed Green’s importance for the Warriors during a recent appearance on Gilbert Arenas‘ podcast, “Gil’s Arena.” Iguodala mentioned that Green covers his teammates’ mistakes and knows all the plays that the opposing team plans to make, which, in his opinion, makes him a genius.

Draymond basically covering up everybody else’s weaknesses, That’s what he’s brilliant at and he knows everything. He’s in tune with the game, he knows everybody’s plays. He knows what they come with the first play out of the timeout, Listen, y’all can say whatever y’all want to about this man, but it’s like a genius there,” Iguodala said.

Draymond Green might not be the player with the highest stat numbers, but his basketball IQ, playmaking, and defense played a vital role in the four championships the Warriors won in the past nine years.
