Draymond Green is known to advocate players’ issues and rights through the media in the past. He’s one of those who doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, especially to express his displeasure. The Golden State Warriors forward took to Twitter to give his opinion on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement’s (CBA) recent changes. Revolving around his disappointment on the curbs on higher spending teams, he came out to argue that middle and lower spectrum teams don’t spend because they don’t want to.
Teams that are (at least) $17.5 million over the luxury tax apron won’t be able to offer a mid-level exception to free agents. The curb affects high spending teams like the Warriors the most since they already have $190 million in payroll this season. “players lose again,” he mentioned in disbelief of the NBPA rushing into a deal like this.
The curb on high spending teams wasn’t the only thing that upset Green. In another tweet, Green spoke about the new In Season tournament. “What happened to the 1mm they said when this idea was first introduced?!?! sheesh we lost 500k there too!” He replied to a tweet by Shams Charania that reported a prize money of $500,000 per player. The forward was definitely expecting a higher number than the one reported as of now.
The new imposition intends to help the middle and lower spending teams to do better in the tournament. A fair shot at adding younger talent in free agency and making the playoffs. While many players from high spending franchises apart from Green have also let out their voices, the league intends to make the spending game fair for everyone.
What other changes is the NBA potentially intending to imply following this season?
The NBA has a few changes on their mind in order to expand and bring in more revenue and players. Firstly, the league intends to implement a ‘minimum games played’ requirement for post season awards like the MVP. Players who consistently have been sitting out are, therefore, being tried to be had on court more often.
The NBA is also reported to incorporate an In-Season tournament that will have pool play games. This will be a part of the regular season. Set to start in November, eight teams will progress into the next stage the following month, with the top four playing at a neutral site. The winners of the In-Season tournament will be awarded with prize money per player.
The NBA is also set to increase the upper limits of contract extension from 120% of salary to 140% of salary. Giving room to more two-way contracts, teams will now get to carry three players on such contracts in their active roster.
