In 2022, the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Championship, and Jordan Poole, who was drafted by the team in 2019, played a crucial role in their victory. He signed a 4-year, $128 million contract, raising hopes among fans that he would lead the team when Stephen Curry starts to decline. During the past season’s training camp, a video went viral showing Draymond Green punching Poole.
After the incident, the Golden State Warriors struggled with their team chemistry compared to the season they won the championship. Jordan Poole, who played a crucial role as their key bench player, also experienced a decline in performance. This decline significantly impacted the Warriors’ performance, ultimately leading to their elimination in the second round of the playoffs this year.
Although both Draymond Green and Jordan Poole have faced numerous questions regarding the incident, they chose not to provide direct responses. However, in a recent guest appearance on “The Pat Bev Podcast,” Draymond offered a subtle hint, suggesting that the punch was merely a triggering event while the root cause of the altercation had been beneath the surface for some time.
“I don’t just hit people. Dialogue happens over time and you usually ain’t triggered by something that fast… We know stuff you don’t say amongst men. We know things that you have to stand on,” Green said.
The Aftermath of the Jordan Poole-Draymond Green altercation
After Draymond Green’s punch and the subsequent leak of the video, the NBA community responded with outrage, expressing their demand for severe consequences to be imposed on Green. However, the Golden State Warriors decision to address the issue by having Green take some time away from the team and suspending him for a couple of pre-season games faced significant criticism from fans.
Poole, a crucial player during the 2022 Championship campaign, showcased impressive performance statistics, averaging 17 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting an impressive 51%. Given his valuable contributions, it was expected that Poole would receive a significant increase in compensation. The Golden State Warriors acknowledged his worth and granted him a substantial contract extension. Poole was awarded a lucrative 4-year, $102 million contract.
Despite securing a substantial contract, Jordan faced challenges in living up to the expectations of becoming a high-scoring guard. Although he averaged 20.4 points per game in the regular season, his shooting efficiency took a significant hit, plummeting to 43%. Unfortunately, his struggles continued during the playoffs, where his numbers declined even further. He scored only 10.3 points per game, shooting a disappointing 34% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.
In a surprising turn of events, Jordan Poole was traded to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Chris Paul. This move not only provided the Golden State Warriors with additional cap space but also opened up an opportunity for Poole to showcase his skills as the first option alongside Kyle Kuzma in the upcoming season.
Poole will have the chance to prove that the Warriors made a wrong decision in trading him, while the team utilized the freed-up cap space to secure Draymond Green’s services with a new 4-year, $100 million contract.
