“Clearly we’re just moving the needle…” Draymond Green gets honest on Victor Wembanyama being contender for DPOY while Jayson Tatum gets sidelined for MVP

Draymond Green disagrees with Victor Wembanyama being a DPOY contendor and makes a case for Jayson Tatum's MVP.

As March has begun, the NBA will get ready to decide on the regular season awards soon. As the leaderboards are changing every week, fans, analysts, and players all have started having conversations about their picks for these awards. Along with MVP, there is also buzz about the Defensive Player of the Year award.

With Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert leading the charts, the San Antonio Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama has entered the conversations. Like many, the Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green expressed his disagreement with Wembanyama’s inclusion on the list on a recent episode of his podcast, ‘The Draymond Green Show’. Green started with praise for the number one draft pick.

And as he (Wemby) continue on his career and that team gets better I don't think those numbers are going anywhere.

According to the Warriors, the rookie will get more opportunities in the future with the award, as it should not be the case this year without comparing to Gobert’s performance, who as per Green is the more deserving of the award.

The Warriors forward then mentioned Jayson Tatum‘s low ranking on the MVP ladder.

Then you gotta move the needle back for Jason Tatum. Because clearly, we're just moving the needle whenever we feel like we can.

Green in the past said the reason behind Tatum’s ranking is his loss in the NBA finals. In Green’s opinion, this does not apply to Wembanyama considering the Spurs are 24th on defense in the league.

Draymond Green picks Jayson Tatum for MVP

Despite being on the ladder, and with the best team record in the league, the Boston Celtics guard Jayson Tatum is not in favor of winning the Most Valuable Player award this year. The player moved from fifth place to fourth this week, leaving the Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic behind.

Draymond Green recently shared his thoughts on Tatum’s MVP ranking. The forward, on his podcast, expressed disappointment towards the list and believed that the reason behind Tatum’s ranking in his lack of championships. In the last few years, the Celtics guard has come close to winning but has failed every time.

According to Green, Tatum will not win the MVP award before he wins a championship. Hence, the forward disagreed with Wembanyama’s selection as a contender for DPOY, stating the double standards in the league. Considering it is the Spurs center’s rookie year and the low defensive ranking of the team.
