“We called Bob and told him not to get rid of GP” Draymond Green reveals how he and Stephen Curry pushed Bob Myers to re-sign Gary Payton II

Gary Payton II has proven to be an important part of the Golden State Warriors‘ system. Without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, the 28-year-old would not have seen the Warriors locker room after his initial 10-day contract expired. Gary Payton II had spent years wandering around teams in the NBA and the G-League, but he had never found a permanent place to call it ‘home’.

Green revealed that he and Curry were the ones who pushed general manager Bob Myers to keep Payton around at the end of the 2020-21 season during “The Draymond Green Show,”  following the Warriors’ Game 6 win over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Thursday night. Payton’s initial 10-day contract with Golden State came to an end following the 2020-21 season, and he was doubtful about his future with the organisation.

Gary Payton ii’s journey to becoming an NBA Champion.

Gary Payton ii is the son of former NBA player and Hall of Famer Gary Payton who played 13 seasons with the Seattle Supersonics, nicknamed “The Glove” for his exceptional defensive abilities. His son was also called the “Young Glove” for his defensive standpoint too. Gary Payton II had the most difficult journey to the top out of the Warriors’ nine first-time champions on Thursday.

Gary payton ii’s outstanding play at Salt Lake Community College won him a scholarship to Oregon State, his father’s alma mater, where he excelled but went undrafted. He played for various teams such as Rockets, Bucks and the Lakers from 2015-19. In 2019 he was called on and cut out a few times by the Wizards and Trail Blazers after finally earning the 15th roster spot for the Warriors in 2021. After all, his journey to the Warriors was the length of a basketball court. The Warriors rightly refused his front-office ambitions and kept him on the floor, and nine months later, he is an NBA champion, having played a key part in the team’s championship victory over Boston.

Draymond Green and Stephen Curry’s pivotal role in keeping Payton at Golden State.

Following the Warriors’ Game 6 triumph over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Thursday night, “The Draymond Green Show” was recorded at the NBA floor, when Green revealed that he and Curry were the ones who persuaded club president and general manager Bob Myers to keep Gary Payton ii after the 2020-21 season. Draymond remembers what he told Bob Myers after Payton’s 10-day contract came to an end: “You can’t get rid of GP. Like, you got to bring him back. You see what he’s doing? You got to bring him back.”

Payton’s first 10-day contract with the Warriors was signed on April 8, 2021, and it terminated following a five-point away defeat to the Boston Celtics on April 17, 2021. Golden State brought Payton back on a second 10-day deal two days later before signing him to a two-year, $1.99 million contract for the rest of the season. Payton had finally settled down in the NBA, and he lived up to Green and Curry’s confidence, averaging a career-high 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 17.6 minutes across 71 games this season.

Payton played the sixth-most minutes per game (18.6) of any Warriors player against the Celtics in the NBA Finals and shot 59.1 percent from the field. He scored 15 points off the bench in the Warriors’ Game 5 victory against Boston. He’s an uptight beast on defence, like his father, with the balance, instincts, and disruptive talents to make any NBA guard’s life a living hell for 15 minutes every night. Gary Payton II, like his father, is now an NBA champion and his journey to the top was far more tough than his father’s, but he got his ring, and after six years of basketball misery, he’s finally earned a real paycheck.
