Golden State Warriors superstar Chris Paul has a long-time beef with one of the best referees in the NBA. Chris Paul and Scott Foster have squared off several times in their career. The latest was a couple of months back. Foster ejected Paul after he argued with Foster about an apparent wrong foul call.
Current teammate Draymond Green has a podcast called The Draymond Green Show hosted by Volume Sports. CPaul was the guest in the latest episode.
Towards the end of the show, Green wanted to talk about officials. When Green mentioned that he wants to talk about Scott Foster, Paul replied;
Knock it off... I can't right now, but in due time we'll have that conversation.
Paul obviously did not want to get into the discussion surrounding Foster. He knows well that if he reveals a lot, the league could reprimand him. Draymond mentioned that Foster is a sensitive topic for Paul in all these years.
Draymond Green mentioned that Scott Foster is very good at maintaining a strict line that they do not let players cross. Although he has never been in a rough spot with Foster, Green respects the way Foster controls the game. What gets on his nerves is when referees will initially talk back and then suddenly blow the whistle for a technical foul. Chris Paul agrees with that mentioning some referees allow a bit of leeway.
But Paul feels that they play in an intense game. Tensions between players do boil over to the referees over the course of a game. Paul thinks some referees talk back to players to keep things in check. Although most just respond with a technical foul call. If you add missed calls to the list, it is bound to bring out altercations between players and referees.
Chris Paul and Scott Foster’s long-time beef
Scott Foster has refereed playoff games involving Chris Paul’s team 20 times. Paul and his teams have a miserable record of 3-17 in those games. That record speaks volumes.
Paul’s teams were favored in 15 of those 20 matchups. Chris Paul has mentioned to the league about his problem with Foster refereeing his games. Despite them trying to fix the issue, the ejection two months back opened old wounds.
Paul is regarded as one of the most intelligent players in the league. His awareness of the rules is second to none. Which is why he has been on the league’s competition committee for the past 15 years.
Foster is the most experienced referee in the game. Having refereed 23 Finals games is the most experience of any referees the league hires. Two of the biggest egos to clash regarding rules and how they are used might be the reason for their disputes.
Whatever their beef might stem from, Paul does not want to talk about it at the present time. But he did hint that in due time he will reveal all.
