“I’m ready to live the truth” Dwayne Wade got candid on supporting his child in the LGBTQ+ community

“I’m ready to live the truth” Dwayne Wade got candid on supporting his child in the LGBTQ+ community

Zaya and Dwayne Wade

Dwayne Wade expressed concerns for the future of his 15-year-old transgender daughter Zaya Wade. The 40-year-old NBA legend said in February 2020 that his daughter, Zion, who was given the name Zion at birth and was gendered male, has changed her name to Zaya after coming out as transgender. Wade distinguished himself by dazzling on the grandest platform at an early age. But the three-time NBA champion was unselfish when it came time to make adjustments. ‘Flash’ was prepared to do everything to win and his greatest triumph, though, arose away from the court.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on “The Ellen Show” in 2020, the retired NBA All-Star talked about supporting Zaya, his transgender daughter. Dwayne Wade said that his 12-year-old once wanted to have a conversation about using she/her pronouns and using a different name than the one she was given at birth when she came home one day. Wade claimed that he and Gabrielle Union saw having to be their daughter’s allies as one of the duties that go along with being parents. Wade did mention Zion’s gender identity since he said it would be her message to the world and also mentioned that she was a member of the LGBTQ community.

The Flash- Dwayne Wade’s alter ego

Dwyane Wade aka “The Flash”, is one of the most well-known, prosperous, and recognizable players in NBA history. Wade is Miami Heat’s all-time leader in eight different offensive categories. He is a skilled finisher near the hoop and a clutch postseason performer. Wade was renowned for his aggressive style of play, ability to make difficult layups, and ability to finish around the basket, frequently through contact. Despite his height, he showed himself to be a fierce defender by making use of his natural shot-blocking abilities. Wade was selected by the Miami Heat with the No. 5 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft after leading Marquette to the Final Four in that year.

Wade played for the Miami Heat for the most of his 16-year career, winning three NBA titles. He was a 13-time NBA All-Star, an 8-time All-NBA Team member, a 3-time All-Defensive Team member, and Finals MVP. Wade also holds the record for most points, games, assists, steals, made shots, and shots attempted for Miami. Wade averaged 30.2 points per game in the 2008–09 season, leading the league in scoring and winning his first NBA scoring title. Wade’s career would end with 23,165 points on 48% of his shots. In addition to being chosen as one of the league’s 75 all-time greatest players, the Miami Heat retired his #3 jersey, making him a potential Hall of Famer.

Wade and his never ending support for Zaya and the LGBTQ+ community

The former Miami Heat star has developed into a lovely family person since his retirement. Dwayne Wade was there for his transgender daughter, even when she revealed it to him. Wade gave his account of the moment Zaya released the truth while appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Additionally, he discussed how he and Gabrielle Union parent their 15-year-old daughter. He said: “So once Zaya, our 12-year-old came home.. and said ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys, I think going forward, I’m ready to live my truth, I want to be referred to as she and her, I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.”

Zaya has probably benefited from Dwayne Wade’s amazing treatment in order for her to flourish in her truth. The NBA Hall of Famer stood by his daughter in the face of all the criticism from others as he  continues to support his 15-year-old even now. Since at least April, when Union and Wade’s kids attended the Miami Beach Pride, they have advocated for Zion and LGBTQ inclusiveness more generally. Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle are now supporters of the LGBTQ+ community because she gave him the information he needed to see things differently.
