For the 2012-13 season, Dwight Howard was teamed with Kobe Bryant on the Lakers for the first time in his career. While both Bryant and Howard were named All-Stars this season, the Lakers were swept out of the playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs, which was a sad outcome. Howard eventually signed with the Houston Rockets in free agency, and that was the end of it. Many people did not believe Howard and Bryant got along, owing to their team’s lack of success that season and Howard’s choice to leave for Houston. Despite claims to the contrary, Howard and Bryant were close friends. Howard also disclosed his favourite Kobe tale.

Which constantly reminds him that he and Bryant were friends even when everyone else says differently. “I remember going to Kobe’s house one time, and he liked that movie Pitch Perfect. He was like, ‘yo, have you seen that movie Pitch Perfect?’ and I’m like, ‘yeah, I like that movie,’ and he’s like ‘yeah I like it too,’ and I’m like, ‘get the f*** out of here, you don’t like Pitch Perfect
To which he says, ‘I was just watching it last night, it’s one of my favorite movies’… I don’t care what people say, me and Kobe connected. I look back at all the pictures I’ve got of him, just me and him together, just talking, all the s*** that happened between me and him…I can see that. So when people saying ‘Kobe ain’t f*** with you like that’ I just laugh.”
Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant’s unbreakable bond

It’s understandable that if two teammates don’t produce success together on the court, they won’t like each other. We’ve seen friendships in the NBA fall apart due to lack of on-court success, such as James Harden and Kyrie Irving with the Brooklyn Nets because of their disappointing seasons with the Lakers, many assumed such was the case with Howard and Bryant.
But that is definitely not the case, since Dwight Howard and Bryant stayed close even when they were no longer on the same team, as Howard’s brief narrative about them bonding over Pitch Perfect shows. Howard even acknowledges that when he hears people suggesting that he and Bryant were not close, he just remembers this brief incident and smiles. It’s astonishing to think about how many people Bryant influenced and spent time with while juggling being a professional basketball player and a parent to four girls.
