Dwyane Wade slams legislation banning trans athletes from women’s sports and says he is scared for his trans daughter
Dwyane Wade opened up about his trans daughter, saying that he is still afraid for her because of the prejudice and lack of safety for trans individuals in the United States. He also attacked laws that forbid transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.
Zaya and Dwyane Wade
Retired NBA superstar Dwyane Wade recently spoke about his daughter Zaya who came out as transgender. Speaking with CNN’s Poppy Harlow, the former Miami Heat superstar player said that despite having everything to support his daughter, he was still scared when his daughter was out of the house. As banning trans athletes continues across America, Wade also said that lawmakers should not make laws if they can’t experience it. He also credited Zaya for her bravery and for accepting herself for who she was.
Wade said that his daughter has got a platform to express herself and parents who can support her. However, even now, when she goes out of the house, he is scared for her. “As blessed as it is for my daughter to have parents who can support her, I’m still afraid every moment she leaves the house,” he told Harlow at the event in New York City. “And not just because of gun violence, but because of the way people perceive her in this world.” Zaya is a black American and a trans person, it is completely understandable why the 13 x All-Star player is scared for his 15-year-old daughter.
The former NBA Finals MVP also criticized the lawmakers’ failure to draft gender-affirming laws. “To me, it’s a joke. This is our life. We live this. When you’re out there making rules, if you’re not experiencing this,” he said. Wade also added that treading in life being a trans person is difficult. Alongside his Hollywood star wife, the three-time NBA champion has spoken about his daughter and been supportive of her when she came out as a trans woman in 2020.

Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya Wade granted legal name and gender change
After a long plea, Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya has been granted permission to change her legal name. She has been granted an official name and an official gender change. As per the documents, the permission was granted on Feb. 24. The order was signed by a Los Angeles County judge. Zaya will be officially recognized as a female, while her name will be changed to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade.
The petition to change the name and the gender of Wade’s child was earlier protested by Wade’s ex-wife and Zaya’s mother Siohvaughn Funches. The former couple divorced in 2010 after eight years of marriage. “Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth and I want to be referenced as she and her and I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,” Wade said in “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2020.
