The Turkish government is known to take a hard stand on its dissidents. People often raise their voices against the government and are subjected to harsh measures. One former NBA star to finds himself at the center of these measures after his public spat with the Recep Tayyip Erdogan led government.

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, claimed that the Turkish government is offering $500,000 for information leading to his detention, putting his life in peril. Freedom claimed in an interview with the New York Post that he learned about the prize last week when his name appeared on Turkey’s list of the country’s most wanted terrorists for the year 2023. He recently took to Instagram claiming about the threat to his life by the Turkish government

The Swiss-born, American citizen who was raised in Turkey has a long-running dispute with the Turkish authorities that dates back more than ten years. His public criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling him the “Hitler of our Century” and a dictator. The former NBA center is finally challenging a bounty set on his head after an astonishing turn of events.

Speaking about his situation Enes said, “That makes it so dangerous, Turkish intelligence were after the people on the list, but now everyone is after them because they want the money. There are so many journalists, so many activists, and so many athletes, but they aren’t as well-known as me. They are way easier targets — and they’re alone out there.” 

The situation though is worsening for Enes Freedom with every day passing by. As via Instagram, he recently revealed the threats to his life because of the bounty. He is listed by many gangs, cartels, mafia and professional hitmen because of the prize placed on his head by the Turkish Government. Calling out the president he also wrote: “I can’t believe @rterdogan is putting an American citizen’s life in danger on U.S. soil.”

The former NBA player has been vocal in his criticism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In 2017, he referred to Erdogan as “the Hitler of our century.” He said that the reason he was being detained by police at a Romanian airport was that the Turkish embassy had canceled his passport. He eventually boarded a plane bound for London and landed in America a day later.

Freedom changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom and became a citizen of the United States in November 2021. Since the Houston Rockets released him in February 2022, he has been a free agent. He has claimed that the NBA is targeting him. Because he has spoken out against the Chinese government’s continuous mistreatment of the Uyghur people.

Last season, the seasoned big man last competed for the Boston Celtics. Freedom participated in 35 games and recorded a 3.7-point and 4.6 rebound average. In the 2011 NBA Draft, Enes was selected third and played for 11 seasons. The 30-year-old’s career averages are 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, and he has represented five different teams.
