“My father had been wrongly jailed” Enes Kanter Freedom’s father was acquitted of TERRORISM links

Enes Kanter, Mehmet Kanter

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA centre who has been a fierce critic of the Turkish president and his policies, claimed in 2020 that his father was once arrested and harassed on the pretext that he belonged to a terrorist organization.

Mehmet Kanter, the father of Enes Kanter and a professor of genetics in Turkey, was accused of supporting a clergyman located in the United States who Turkey accused of planning an unsuccessful coup attempt. The 30-year-old centre Enes, a free agent in the NBA, was charged in Turkey in 2018 on suspicion of being a member of an armed terrorist organization, an allegation he rejects, and was in the process of applying for U.S. citizenship. Enes has stated that he thinks the government singled out his father for his criticism of the Turkish President’s record on human rights. Mehmet Kanter was given a 15-year jail term in 2018 and was released in 2020 after he was acquitted of all counts.

Enes Kanter and his NBA stint

The Utah Jazz acquired Enes Kanter with the third overall pick in the 2011 draft. Kanter played in every game during his first season with the Jazz, appearing in 66 games while averaging 4.6 points and 4.2 rebounds. In the ensuing years at Utah, his numbers continued to rise in every significant statistical area. The centre was moved to the OKC Thunder after fewer than four seasons in Salt Lake City, where he enjoyed a breakout season. The centre made a name for himself as one of the league’s top backup centres before being traded again. In 2017, Kanter was relocated to the New York Knicks, where he averaged 14.1 points and 11 rebounds while compiling 32 double-doubles.

At the 2009 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, when he helped his nation’s junior team win a bronze medal, Enes Kanter also won MVP honors following his tenure with the Knicks, he went on to play for the Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers, where he likewise established himself as a backup centre with very little playing time. He then went on to play for those two teams once more in the previous two seasons and was  being eventually traded to the Houston Rockets and subsequently waived by them. His final playing stop was Boston, where he made 35 appearances for the Celtics and recorded an average of 3.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Kanter’s father was in prison after two years who faced consequences for his views

The original punishment for Enes Kanter’s father was 15 years in jail. Kanter tweeted to all of his followers in 2020 that his father had been unexpectedly freed as a result of public outcry against the government over the situation. Enes, who has spent the most of his life in the United States, identifies himself as a cleric’s close associate. After the failed coup attempt, many of the cleric’s devotees were detained or sacked from their employment. After relocating to the US ten years ago, the 30-year-old athlete, who most recently played for the Celtics, is still a rare full-throated admirer. Kanter’s passport was cancelled by Turkey in 2017, and he hasn’t been permitted to leave the country since.

Since 2013, when the government was struck by both a sizable corruption scandal and widespread demonstrations generated by the redevelopment, Enes Kanter has exploited his enormous platform in the NBA to condemn Turkey’s increasingly authoritarian path. On social media, he routinely refers to the Turkish president as a madman and a tyrant, and he once likened him to Adolf Hitler. Kanter’s new life objective is to bring justice to his own country. The Turkish government may or may not guarantee his personal safety in light of this. He has now dedicated himself totally to advocacy, denouncing the alleged atrocities committed by China and condemning American businesses who manufacture their products using slave labor.
