“Diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma” Erik Spoelstra’s wife reveals how toddler son won the battle against cancer
Erik Spoelstra with his family
Erik Spoelstra is a one-of-one guy and there’s no doubt about it. As there aren’t many people in or around the league who can take care of their on and off-court duties greatly. But Miami Heat’s Head Coach is surely on the list and is ranked higher. He led the team to a successful road and tried his best to get the job done but the Boston Celtics had other plans as they called the curtains in Game 7. During the regular season, not many know but life wasn’t the same and easy for Erik Spoelstra. As his son was battling cancer and not many knew about it, of course, he opted to keep it personal and now the young gun has won his battle against cancer. But the time Coach Spo and the family went through was surely tough.
Last season Erik Spoelstra missed one of Miami Heat’s games against the Kevin Durant led Brooklyn Nets and there was a reason behind it. Which never really made it to the headlines as it wasn’t revealed to public. Erik Spoelstra had to be a dad that day as his son underwent an unexpected surgery which later revealed that he had cancer. His son was battling against Burkitt Lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). NHL is a cancer of the lymphatic system. It develops when the body makes abnormal B lymphocytes (lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell). But the job is done and now he’s completely fine as he out shiningly fought it all out.
Erik Spoelstra’s wife reveals how their son won the battle against cancer
Erik Spoelstra kept it all private when his son was undergoing the medical procedure but now when he’s on the winning end with no danger his wife revealed it all. She took to her Instagram account and posted a photo and a clip of her son battling it all out as he rang the bell in the cancer wing at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Erik Spoelstra’s wife also wrote: “The day after his fourth birthday, our son went in for an unexpected surgery. Intussusception. A mass was found. “Benign” I thought to myself. It has to be benign. One week later, he was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma. In the days, weeks, and months that followed… he endured (and thrived through) Chemotherapy. He was… and continues to be.. so brave. He did not lose his joy. So many friends and loved ones made sure that none of us did. Yesterday, our big boy got to ring the bell in the cancer wing at Nicklaus, and the gratitude I feel is overwhelming. REMISSION…”
Erik Spoelstra’s wife was also thankful to the hospital staff, family, friends, God and everyone who was around them and their son during the tough times. Now it’s all about the smile the little one had on his face throughout the process which stays the same since he is a brave guy and a champion.
