One thing all analysts love to do is compare. Compare teams, compare dynasties, compare eras and perhaps most important of all – compare players. These analysts spent countless hours debating upon the details and intricacies of each players game in an attempt to find out which one is better. They often present their findings periodically, in the form of lists.
The latest list release has been done by ESPN. ESPN recently ranked their top 100 players, heading into the 2023-2024 NBA season. The parameters for the selection were not revealed however, and only the final product was shown. One of the more shocking aspect of the list was the inclusion of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at the No. 8 spot, above players like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Jimmy Butler, Devin Booker and Damian Lillard.
Many sports channels questioned the wisdom of this decision. One asked the question, “ESPN ranked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander above LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, and Jimmy Butler. Fair?”
In any case, these lists are extremely subjective and keep on changing rapidly. Perhaps, as the season progresses, some aspects of the list might prove true. However, until a young player like Gilgeous-Alexander matches up against Davis and James and proves himself to be better, it would be a bit of a long shot to rank him so high.
NBA fans are pissed at the high ranking of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
It appears the new rankings did not go down well with many NBA fans. Fans found some players ranked too high and some ranked too low. They were apparently frustrated with the high ranking of players who were yet to prove themselves in the post-season.
They took to Twitter to express their anger. When talking about Gilgeous-Alexander’s rank, one user commented, “All of those guys blew him have won or made the finals. Fucking dumbass company.” Here’s what the others have to say:
Hopefully for Oklahoma City Thunder fans, Gilgeous-Alexander reads these comments and channels his inner Mamba Mentality to prove them wrong. He is definitely one of he rising stars of the league and it will be exciting to see what he is able to next season.
