Brittney Griner is back in the headlines but unfortunately, she’s still stuck in Russia as a “political prisoner”. As the country is in a war against Ukraine and wants to make the most out of the WNBA superstar if they ever release her. She’s been “wrongfully detained” for like more than 200 days now and is just stuck in the situation with no major fault. As of now, Brittney Griner is serving her nine long years sentence in the Russian Penal Colony. As she recently pleaded guilty for the drugs smuggling charges (officials found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage).
Brittney Griner also mentioned the medical purpose behind those and how it was all unintentionally done. But the Russian officials and the court cared the least about her. All these things happening around have created a tensed situation between the United States of America and Russia. As the Biden Administration has even made efforts to get Brittney Griner back on American Soil but Russia is showing off his greed during talks related to a prisoner swap deal for the release of WNBA Superstar who has brought glory for her nation on different hardwoods around the globe.
The story is quite clear for many Americans around especially the WNBA players. As they have basically boycotted all the basketball leagues in Russia they used to suit up for to secure a bag during summers and winters. As the main reason for BG to travel to Russia was money as the offers they have from WNBA aren’t just enough. But what they did with Brittney Griner is really shocking and Americans are really punishing them as that’s injustice for many. But the story ain’t the same for the 48 Canadian Hockey players who still are still in Russia and will be competing.
Canadian Hockey players refuse to leave Russia even after Brittney Griner’s arrest
The Canadian Government supports Ukraine and stands against Russia. They have also suggested all their citizens to not to travel to Russia as you never know when you get stuck into the very same situation as Brittney Griner. The story was also the same for the athletes and many agreed to it by not suiting up for the Russian Leagues. NHL star Jake Virtanen is one of the many names who were frequent visitors but now have pulled out. But the story ain’t the same for the 48 others Canadian Hockey players.
48 Canadian Hockey players are still in Russia and suiting up for the different leagues they wish to. They were heavily criticized for this decision of theirs. So Agent Ritchie Winter came out in their defense and quoted: “At the end of the day, they’re husbands and fathers who have responsibilities to their families. If you’re a young family with limited resources because you played mostly in the minors, there’s a desire to take care of your family.”
Brittney Griner is really unfortunate as she is stuck in Russia and athletes boycotting the country for the situation they are in is also fair. But at the same time, there are many stars not only from the Hockey background but overall sports who depend on Russia for their comparatively better offers. And, at the end of the day obviously, everyone has a family to feed as the agent mentioned. So it’s not really fair to blame those guys as they aren’t really at fault. As of now, talks to get BG back are in progress and everyone just hopes she can be back as soon as possible.
