Australian basketball star Ben Simmons will not be playing for his country in the upcoming FIBA World Cup in late August and early September. The 26-year-old was left off Australia’s preliminary roster as he continues to recover from a nerve issue in his back, which has kept him out of action since mid-February.
Simmons, who last competed for Team Australia in 2013, indicated a wish to participate in the World Cup, but his ongoing recovery prevented him from being included in the team. In an interview with Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Simmons said, “I’m currently rehabilitating my back injury and putting my full effort and focus towards that. I love what Coach [Brian] Goorjian is building with the Boomers and I look forward to being a part of the program in the future.”
With only 42 games played for the Brooklyn Nets due to back and knee problems, Simmons had a dismal season, averaging 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. He also did not play for Brooklyn after being acquired by them due to a back injury, missing the whole 2021–22 season while he was away from the Brooklyn Nets in the James Harden trade.
Simmons is still a highly compensated player despite his absence, with the Nets paying him $37.9 million in 2023–2024 and $40.3 million in 2024–25.

NBA Twitter wasted no time in mocking the troubled star as soon as it was revealed that Ben Simmons wouldn’t be representing Australia in the FIBA World Cup. Many NBA fans were quick to point out that not only had Simmons’ team but also his own nation released him.
“Even his own country don’t claim him,” one user wrote, while another added, “Because he’s already on a Chinese roster”
The difficulties Simmons has had on the court have been well-documented, and his exclusion from the World Cup is just the most recent blow in his professional life.
