Before playing the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers had a stellar 4-0 record. Sadly, their early-season success took a little turn for the worst. In addition to losing their first game of the year by a score of 119-98, the Blazers also lost Dame to injury. A strained right calf forced Lillard to leave the game with little over five minutes left in the third quarter.

After the Trailblazers’ point guard hobbled off the field and entered the locker room without stopping the team stated that no MRI was necessary for the injury. He might not, however, suit up for Friday night’s home game against the Houston Rockets. Portland gets a couple of days free following their contest on Friday before hosting the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Speaking after the game Damian Lillard said, “Now I’ve just got to be smart, and make sure I’m getting a couple of treatment sessions in each day, and just try to stretch it, So probably not going to be playing that game on Friday. That will give me six days of maybe two sessions some days, three sessions other days, and try to be ready for that one. We’ll see,

He scored 22 points in the 26 minutes of the game that he played on Wednesday. But in the previous three games, he had 30-plus points, including back-to-back performances with 40-plus points. Lillard is still averaging 31.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game this season while shooting 49.5% from the field.

Damian Lillard was careful to stress again and again during his post-game news conference that the injury was nothing he was overly concerned with. He also said it definitely didn’t make sense to push himself so much right in the fifth game of the season but if the same situation had occurred in the playoffs he would’ve definitely given it his all. Here’s how fans reacted to his injury.

This offseason, the Trail Blazers made it plain that they intended to keep developing a competitive team around the six-time All-Star. They gave him a two-year, $121.8 million contract deal and brought Gary Payton II and Jerami Grant to the team. Despite efforts to upgrade the squad, Portland is not certain to finish in the top six in the Western Conference.

Given how much the clubs in the center of the West have progressed, just making the play-in round might be difficult. Losing Damian Lillard for an extended period of time will be tough for the Blazers since a little number of games might be the difference between sixth and seventh place or tenth and eleventh place.
